Weekend Re-Cap - Christian Brothers University

Memphis, Tennessee - Northwest played a thrilling series against Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tennessee, over the weekend. Christian Brothers won the series 2 games to 1 with the series coming down to a play at the plate in the last inning of the third and deciding game. Nick Gotta (.364 batting average with 6 RBIs), Garrett Fort (.375 batting average with .545 on-base percentage & 3 stolen bases), Bryce Shea (3.2 IP, 0.00 ERA, 1 walk, 4 strike-outs in 2 relief appearances), and Joseph Hietpas (3.60 ERA, 1-0 record, 2 walks, 4 strike-outs, 5.0 IP) were your series MVPs for Northwest.


Game 1 – Christian Brothers University beat Northwest Missouri State University 5-0 in a 9-inning game that lasted 2 hours, 9 minutes, in front of 225 fans, in 55 degree weather.  With the loss, Northwest's record fell to 0-1, 0-0 MIAA. Anthony Caenepeel earned the started and was a workhorse in the game.  CBU lead was 2-0 heading into the 7th inning.  After the bases were loaded, Jacob Wagner came into the game in relief.  Three runs subsequently scored and were charged to Caenepeel for the eventual final score of 5-0.  The Bearcats’ offense could not get in sync as they only managed four hits.  Defense play was solid.
Bearcat debuts - Jay Hrdlicka made his Bearcat debut, played catcher, and earned his first collegiate start.  Jake Lewis made his Bearcat debut and played designated hitter. Bryce Shea made his Bearcat debut and pitched 1.0 inning in the 8th inning.  Congratulations to Jay, Jake, and Bryce.
Offense – Ozzie Adams was the offensive MVP of the game.  Ozzie went 2 for 3 with a walk.  Nick Gotta hit a triple in the game and went 1 for 4 overall. James Holler also earned a hit and went 1 for 3 overall. Other notables include Jake Lewis earning 2 walks in the game and 0-2 overall, and Garrett Fort with a walk and 0-2 overall. In total, Northwest earned 4 hits, 5 walks, 8 strike-outs, and left 6 runners on base.
Defense – Northwest was charged with 1 error in the game (Adams) that led to 1 unearned run.
Pitching – Anthony Caenepeel was the star of the game. He kept the Bearcats in the game trailing only 2-0 heading into the 7th inning.  Anthony ran into trouble in the 7th, loaded the bases, and did not record an out.  Jacob Wagner came into game in relief. In the end, the 3 inherited runners scored and were charged to Caenepeel to make the score 5.0.  Wagner battled and did not allow any additional runs however. Caenepeel worked 6.0 innings, allowed 8 hits, 5 runs, 4 earned, 0 walks, 8 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and did not hit a batter. Wagner finished the 7th inning and worked 1.0 inning, allowed 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 walks, 0 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, hit 1 batter, and 0 balks. Bryce Shea came into the game in the 8th inning and worked 1.0 inning, allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 0 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter.


Game 2 - Northwest defeated Christian Brothers in game 2 to even the series by the score 11-2. The Bearcats used exemplary pitching and hitting to win the game. Joe Hietpas picked-up the victory in the game. Several Bearcats had terrific days at the plate in the game. Bryce Shea fell 1 out short of picking-up a 3 inning save and was huge in the game. The Bearcats offense took the momentum that Shea produced and exploded for major offensive output late in the game. Northwest evened the series at 1-1 with the big win.  Overall, Northwest's 2016 record stands at 1-1, 0-0 MIAA.
Offense - Nick Gotta was the offensive MVP of the game.  Go-Go-Gotta went 2 for 4 with 4 RBIs and 2 walks. In addition, Kolby Greenslade went 2 for 5 with a RBI, 3 stolen bases, and 2 runs scored in the game. Ozzie Adams went 1 for 5 with a walk and 2 runs scored. Jay Hrdlicka went 1 for 3 with 2 walks, 1 RBI, and a run scored. Jake Lewis went 1 for 5 with a home run, 2 RBIs, and 2 runs scored. Garrett Fort went 1 for 4 with a RBI, 1 stolen base, and 2 runs scored. In total, Northwest earned 8 hits, scored 11 runs, 10 RBIs, 5 walks, 5 strike-outs, and left 10 runners on base.
Defense - Northwest did not commit an error in the game.
Pitching - Joseph Hietpas picked-up the win to move his record to 1-0 after he worked 5.0 innings, allowed 4 hits, 2 runs (both earned), 2 walks, 4 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter. Jacob Wagner came into the game in the 6th inning and worked a fantastic inning of relief.  In total, Jacob worked 1.0 inning, allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 balks, 1 strike-out, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter. John Osborne came into the game in the 7th inning but ran into trouble.  In total, John worked 0.1 inning, allowed 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 walks, 0 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he hit 1 batter.  Bryce Shea came into the game to close it out. Shea worked out of a sticky situation in the bottom of the 7th inning and that momentum led to a Bearcat offensive surge in the 8th. In total, Shea worked 2.2 innings, allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk, 4 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter.


Game 3 - Christian Brothers University defeated Northwest in an absolutely thrilling game where the game tieing run was thrown-out in a play at the plate in the final inning. Northwest lost 5-4 in a 7-inning game but the Cats kept fighting throughout all 21 outs. Northwest's pitching struggled as each of the 3 Bearcat hurlers made their 2016 debuts in the game.  With the loss, Christian Brothers won the three game series, 2-1, and Northwest's record fell to 1-2, 0-0 MIAA. Northwest needed about 1 more foot of space and the game was tied and who knows what else would have happened that inning. Great game.
Offense - Garrett Fort was your offensive MVP of the game.  Garrett went 2 for 2, was hit by a pitch, and stole 2 bags in the game. Nick Gotta went 1 for 3 with a huge double that scored 2 runs to bring the Bearcats to within 1 run in the 7th and last inning of the game. Go-Go-Gotta also drew a walk in the game. Jake Lewis went 1 for 3 with a run scored. Austin Wulff went 1 for 3 with a run scored. James Holler earned a RBI with a fielder's choice. Nick Howard went 0 for 1 with a run scored, 1 RBI, 1 walk, and a strike-out in the game. Kolby Greenslade also drew a walk in the contest. In total, Northwest scored 4 runs off of 5 hits, 4 RBIs, 3 walks, 4 strike-outs, and left 4 runners on base. Garrett Fort was thrown out at home plate trying to tie the game in the Top of the 7th inning off of Gotta's double.  2 runs had scored and Fort was running from 1st. Bang-bang play at the plate.  Epic play by both teams.
Defense - Northwest was charged with 1 error in the game (Gotta).
Pitching - Brad Roberts earned the start and worked 4.1 innings, allowed 3 hits, 2 runs (both earned), 4 walks, 3 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter. Austin Battaglia came into the game in the 5th inning, picked up the loss, and worked 1.0 inning, allowed 1 hit, 2 runs (both earned), 1 walk, 1 strike-out, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter. Carson Smith came into the game in the 6th inning and worked 0.2 of an inning, allowed 1 hit, 1 unearned run, 0 walks, 2 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and hit 1 batter.

Next up - Northwest will travel to Arkadelphia, Arkansas, to play Henderson State on Thursday, February 11, at 6pm, in a single nine-inning contest. Northwest will stay in Arkadelphia to play Arkansas Tech on Friday, February 12, and Saturday, February 13, 2016.
