Bearcats lose first three to Washburn, game four on Sunday

Bearcats lose first three to Washburn, game four on Sunday

Your Bearcats have had a tough start to the Washburn series so far this weekend.  Washburn has defeated your Bearcats in each of the first three games of the series.  Of the 28 games the Bearcats have played this season, all but 5 have been on the road.  Your 'Cats have been playing hard in the Washburn series but haven't been able to put together all three phases of the game (pitching, batting, and defense).  However, Northwest is still playing .500 ball in conference with 12 of their next 16 games in Maryville for a play-off push in the home stretch of the season.  All but three of Northwest's conference games have been on the road.  I'm sure if you ask any coach or administrator before the season started if they would take the 'Cats playing .500 ball on all road games, they would accept it in a second.  The fact of the matter is the Bearcats are playing tough on the road and hanging in there for a play-off push with a bunch of home games to help make the run.

In game one, Washburn defeated Northwest by the score 7-0 in a nine-inning game on Friday.  Your Bearcats starting nine included Brandon Huske, SS, Paul Johnson, 2B, Ryan Abernathy, CF, Eric McLaughlin, DH, Austin Wulff, LF, Steven Garber, 1B, Jon Pomatto, RF, Blake Hardegree, C, Zack Ferreira, 3B, and your starting pitcher was Austin Warren.

Offensively, Northwest did not score a run, earned 5 hits, 3 walks, 5 strike-outs, and left 6 runners on base.  Your offensive star of the game was Steen Garber, who went 2 for 4 in the game.  Ryan Abernathy, Eric McLaughlin, and Austin Wulff each earned a hit in the game.

Defensively, Northwest was charged with one error (Zach Douglas) in the game.

Pitching, Austin Warren was your starter in the game but was tagged with the loss to see his 2014 record fall to 1-3.  In total, Austin worked 4.0 innings, allowed 4 hits, 2 runs (both earned), 0 walks, 1 strike-out, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter.  Blaine Reutter came into the game in the fifth inning and worked 2.0 innings, allowed 3 hits, 2 runs (both earned), 0 walks, 0 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter.  Bex Trout came into the game in the 7th inning and worked 1.0 inning, allowed 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 walks, 2 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter.  Brian Schmiedt came into the game in the 8th inning and worked 0.1 inning, allowed 3 hits, 3 runs (all earned), 1 walk, 1 strike-out, 1 wild pitch, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter.  Daulton Perry came into the game with one out in the 8th inning and worked 0.2 inning, allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk, 1 strike-out, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter.

In game two, Northwest lost 7-5 in a seven-inning game against the Ichabods.  Your Bearcats starting nine included Brandon Huske, SS, Paul Johnson, 2B, Ryan Abernathy, CF, Eric McLaughlin, DH, Austin Wulff, LF, Steven Garber, 1B, Jon Pomatto, RF, Blake Hardegree, C, Zack Ferreira, 3B, and your starting pitcher was Hondo Pearcy.

Offensively, Northwest scored 5 runs off of 5 hits, 5 RBIs, 3 walks, 5 strike-outs, and 6 runners left on base.  Your offensive star of the game was Eric McLaughlin, who went 2 for 3 (including a home run) with 3 RBIs, a walk, and a run scored.  Ryan Abernathy, Jon Pomatto, and Alex Singleton each earned a hit in the game.

Defensively, Northwest was charged with one error in the game (Austin Wulff).

Pitching, Hondo Pearcy earned the start in the game but picked-up the loss to see his 2014 record fall to 3-2.  In total, Hondo worked 2.1 innings, allowed 5 hits, 6 runs (all earned), 2 walks, 1 strike-out, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter.  Nikko Pablo came into the game in the third inning and worked 2.2 innings, allowed 2 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 1 strike-out, 0 wild pitches, 1 balk, and he did not hit a batter.  Rob Henrichs came into the game in the 6th inning and worked 0.1 inning, allowed 4 hits, 1 run (earned), 0 walks, 0 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter.  Daulton Perry came into the game with one out in the 6th inning and worked 0.2 innings, allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 1 strike-out, 0 wild pitch, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter.

The Ichabods will return to Falley Field Friday to host just their second series this season when they begin a four-game tilt with Northwest Missouri. They will then return to the road to make up a game at Rockhurst, Wednesday, April 2 at 5 p.m.

The Ichabods dropped to 10-12 overall and 10-10 in the MIAA after losing three of four at Pittsburg State last weekend. They then had a game at Rockhurst postponed due to cold weather.

Ash returns from injury and climbs record charts after another strong start
Senior Brett Ash made his first start since the second week of the season Saturday at Pittsburg State and got a 4-1 win. He struck out nine in the complete game.

Ash moved to a tie for first with his 21st career complete game. Craig Hefner (1982-85) also threw 21 complete games at Washburn. Ash is now sixth with 18 career wins and his next win will move him into a four-way tie for third. His 167 strikeouts is tied for fourth in Washburn history. He will move to third with two more and to a tie for second with 21 more.

Ash is second in Washburn history in career innings pitched and career starts.
