Game re-cap: Northwest beats William Jewell 4-3 off of Hardegree's offensive heroics


Your Northwest Missouri State Bearcats baseball team defeated the William Jewell Cardinals 4-3 in a 9-inning contest in Maryville on Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at Bearcat baseball field.  With the win, Northwest's 2014 season record climbed to 12-8.  With the loss, Jewell's record fell to 5-7 on the year.  Both teams had terrific pitching in the game with the Bearcats pulling out the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the 7th inning.

In the game, your Bearcats starting 9 included Brandon Huske, SS, Paul Johnson, 2B, Ryan Abernathy, CF, Austin Wulff, LF, Zack Ferreira, 3B, Jon Pomatto, RF, Steven Garber, 1B, Blake Hardegree, C, Luke Wilkinson, DH, and your starting pitcher was Kole Klocko.

Offensively, your Bearcats scored 4 runs off of 9 hits, 4 RBIs, 2 walks, 4 strike-outs, and 4 runners were left on base.  Your offensive star of the game was Blake Hardegree and his 3 for 3 performance including a double and a home run with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored.  It was Blake's first home run as a Bearcat.  In addition, Paul Johnson had a terrific game and went 2 for 3 including a double.  Brandon Huske went 1 for 4 (including a double) with a RBI in the game.  Zack Ferreira went 1 for 4 with a run scored in the game.  Jon Pomatto went 1 for 3 with a run scored in the game.  Steven Garber went 1 for 2 in the game. 

Defensively, Northwest was not charged with an error and turned one double-play.

Pitching, Kole Klocko earned the start and cruised through the first two innings in the game before running into trouble in the third.  In total, Kole worked 3.0 innings and allowed 3 hits, 3 runs (all earned), 3 walks, 3 strike-outs, 1 wild pitch, 0 balks, and hit 1 batter.  Bex Trout came into the game in the 4th inning and pitched a gem of a performance.  Bex picked-up the victory in the game for his efforts.  In total, Bex worked 3.0 innings, allowed 1 hit, 0 runs, 1 walk, 4 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and did not hit a batter.  Taylor Bruch made his collegiate and Bearcat debut when he came into the game in the 7th inning.  Taylor's performance was terrific as he made a great first impression.  In total, Taylor worked 1.0 inning, allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk, 0 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter.  In the 8th inning, Nikko Pablo came into the game to relieve Taylor and worked 1.0 inning, allowed 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 walks, 1 strike-out, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter.  In the 9th inning, Jon Pomatto earned his second save of the game and worked 1.0 inning, allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 1 strike-out, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter in an exemplary athletic performance.

Next-up for the Bearcats - Northwest travels to Hays, Kansas, to take on the Fort Hays State Tigers in a MIAA Conference battle.  The two teams are set to play a 4-game series this weekend with one 9-inning game on Friday starting at 5pm.  On Saturday, the two teams will play two 7-inning games starting at 1pm.  On Sunday, the two teams will play a single 9-inning game starting at 1pm.

Notable Bearcats -

Blake Hardegree hit 1.000 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored while playing catcher for your Bearcats.  Blake was not charged with an error or a past ball.










Paul Johnson hit .667 while playing second base for your Bearcats and was not charged with an error in the game.










Andrew "Bex" Trout picked-up his first victory of 2014 and pitched a clutch performance in his 3.0 innings.  In his dominant performance he allowed only 1 hit, 0 runs, 1 walk, and 4 strike-outs.









Taylor Bruch made his collegiate and Bearcat debut against William Jewell and made a big first impression.  Taylor worked 1.0 inning and did not allow a hit or run.









Nikko Pablo follow-up a positive performance in the Southwest Baptist series with a terrific outing against William Jewell.  Against Jewell, Nikko was terrific and worked 1.0 inning, allowed only 1 hit, 0 runs, and 1 strike-out.









Jon Pomatto picked-up his 2nd save in 2014 against William Jewell.  Jon Pomatto worked 1.0 inning and did not allow a hit or any runs and struck-out 1 batter.
