St. Joseph, Mo. - Ozzie Adams, Aaron Barratt, and Anthony Caenepeel all made major contributions to a critical Bearcat win over rival Missouri Western on Tuesday, April 25, 2017, in St. Joseph, by the score 5-2. Maryville, Mo. - Brad Roberts terrific start, Kolby Greenslade's cluth hitting, and Nikko's 3-inning scoreless relief all shine as your Bearcat baseball team beat the University of Central Oklahoma 5-2 on Sunday in Maryville to win the 3-game series. Maryville, Mo. - The University of Central Oklahoma defeated your Northwest Missouri State Bearcat baseball team 10-0 on Saturday in Maryville. Despite losing the no hitter, the UCO pitcher earned a complete game shut-out victory on an exemplary performance. Attaboy.

King Caenepeel Aces Bronchos

Maryville, Mo. - Anthony Caenepeel threw 8.1 innings of shut-out baseball as Northwest beat Central Oklahoma 2-0 to win Game 1 of the series on Friday in Maryville. Northwest's defense was equally terrific as the Bearcats played an error free game. Add in Big Game James Holler's 2-run home run and Nikko Pablo's clutch performance in the 9th and your Bearcats picked-up an important conference win. Northwest is now 25-15, 14-13 MIAA with Friday's win. The Bearcats are in 6th place in the MIAA standings.

Offensively, James Holler was the most valuable player in the game. James hit the 2-run homer in the 4th inning to give the Bearcats all the offense they would need to win the game. In total, James went 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored in the game. Logan Rycraft, Ozzie Adams, Garrett Fort, and Kolby Greenslade each earned a hit in the game. Jay Hrdlicka earned a walk as Northwest's catcher. In total, Northwest scored 2 runs off of 5 hits, 2 RBIs, 1 walk, 6 strike-outs, and left 3 runners on base.

With runners on 1st and 3rd in the 9th inning, Coach Loe called on Nikko Pablo to close out the game. Nikko was clutch and struck-out the 2 UCO batters he faced to freeze the runners on base and captured a Northwest victory. In total, Nikko worked 0.2 of an inning, allowed no hits, no runs, no walks and struck-out the 2 batters he faced. Huge pitching performance by both Bearcats. Anthony Caenepeel's 2017 record now stands at 6-5. Nikko Pablo's performance earned him his 7th save of the season.

Bearcat pitching and defense rebounds but Western wins 5-1

Maryville, Mo. - Missouri Western beat your Northwest Bearcat baseball team 5-1 on Tuesday in Maryville. Northwest's pitching and defense made a terrific rebound following the Southwest Baptist series but the Bearcats could not muster enough offense to run with the Griffons. Your Bearcat bullpen also had a terrific outing and threw nearly 4.0 innings of scoreless relief. Its only a matter of time before your Bearcats' offense explodes with serious run production. Northwest had runners on base throughout the game and just did not come up with the timely hit. With 10 runners left on base, Northwest was just as close to scoring 8-11 runs as 1. The B2R is always optimistic about the Bearcats but this team's offense is primed for a production explosion. With the play-off push well underway, Northwest's offense is about to put the team over the top. Despite the loss, your Bearcats maintain 6th place in the MIAA standings with a 13-13 conference record. The Bearcats are tied with Northeastern State University for 6th place. Northwest's overall record is 24-15.

While the team is disappointed with their 5-game losing streak, your Bearcats played better in today's game. The defense returned to error-free play making. The pitching did not let a single inning get away from them. The bullpen kept the opposing team off the board to give the team a chance to claw back in it. The hitting will come around and I feel bad for the opposing pitching staff that faces a ticked-off Bearcat squad. The B2R is confident with the adjustments made against Western today that Northwest will have a successful upcoming weekend.

Offensively, six different Bearcats had a hit in the game. Garrett Fort earned 2 walks and scored a run in the game as the center fielder. Ozzie Adams went 1 for 5 at second base. Luke Hassman went 1 for 3 (a double) at first base. Jay Hrdlicka earned a RBI and a sacrifice fly as the designated hitter. Kolby Greenslade went 1 for 4 with a stolen base at right field. Alix Herrera went 1 for 3 with a walk as the catcher. Aaron Barratt went 1 for 4 at right field. Logan Rycraft went 1 for 4 at short stop. In total, Northwest scored 1 run off of 6 hits, 1 RBI, 3 walks, 8 strike-outs, and left 10 runners on base.

Defensively, Northwest did not commit an error in the game.

Pitching, Eddy Kraber earned the start in the game but picked-up the loss to see his 2017 record go to 2-2. In total, Eddy worked 5.1 innings, allowed 6 hits, 5 runs, 2 walks and 3 strike-outs. In the 6th inning, Austin Battaglia came into the came and worked 2.2 innings, allowed no hits or runs, 1 walk, 2 strike-outs and he hit one batter. In the 9th inning, Nikko Pablo came into the game and worked 1.0 inning, allowed no hits, no runs, no walks and struck-out 1 batter.

Next - Your Bearcat baseball team will stay in Maryville this weekend to play the University of Central Oklahoma in a 3-game conference. A lot is at stake for both sides so expect an epic match-up between two proud squads. UCO is 12-14 in the MIAA and 22-15-1 overall in 2017.

SBU wins Game 3 & sweeps series

Bolivar, Mo. - Southwest Baptist beat Northwest 11-6 on Saturday to win Game 3 and sweep the series. Northwest had a tough series defensively and pitching. Northwest averaged over 5 runs per game in the series but allowed nearly 12 runs per game. Tip your cap to SBU as they figured out Northwest's pitching riddle. To oversimplify the complex act of pitching a baseball, Northwest caught too much of the plate and too high in the zone. Despite the tough series, Northwest is 24-14, 13-12 MIAA which is good for 6th place in the MIAA standings.

Offensively, Ozzie Adams was the most valuable player for Northwest. Ozzie went 3 for 4 with 1 RBI, 1 walk, and scored 2 runs in the game. Luke Hassman went 3 for 5 with 1 RBI on the day. Kolby Greenslade went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored in the game. Landon Figg went 1 for 4 with 2 RBIs, 1 walk and 1 run scored on the day. Aaron Barrat went 1 for 3 with 1 walk and 1 run scored in the game. Logan Rycraft went 1 for 2 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored on the day. In total, Northwest scored 6 runs off of 11 hits, 6 RBIs, 4 walks, 9 strike-outs, and left 9 runners on base.

Defensively, Northwest committed 4 errors that allowed 3 unearned runs in the game.

Pitching, Brad Roberts earned the start but picked-up the loss in 4.1 innings to see his 2017 record move to 5-5. In total, Roberts worked 4.1 innings, allowed 9 hits, 4 runs, 2 walks and 6 strike-outs in the game. Jacob Wagner worked 0.1 of an inning, allowed 4 hits, 3 runs (only 2 earned), with no walks or strike-outs. Austin Battaglia came into the game and worked 0.1 of an inning and allowed 1 hit, 2 runs (only 1 earned), 1 walk and 1 wild pitch. Nikko Pablo worked 3.0 innings, allowed 4 hits, 2 runs (only 1 earned), 0 walks, hit 1 batter and 1 strike-out.

Southwest Baptist wins Game 2, 17-6

Bolivar, Mo. - A tough day for Bearcat pitching and defense leads to a Southwest Baptist win by the score 17-6 in Bolivar on Friday. Tip your cap to Southwest Baptist as the purple Bearcats had a great approach at the plate, did not swing at many pitches in the dirt, and when they swung it was a nice and quick swing through the zone to punch the ball into play. Joseph Hietpas was the Northwest starter but did not last deep into the game. Northwest's front line bullpen were spent in Game 1 so Coach Loe had to call upon other Bearcat relievers to stop the bleeding. Statisticsally, the bullpen did not do well. But, the B2R was very excited to see how the other relievers used their opportunity and found many silver linings to this rain cloud of a game.

A few thoughts about the relievers in this game. The B2R liked what he saw from them. The statistics are not hot but the B2R eyeball test left me with positives from these pitchers, to wit:

Cole Otto put in 3.0 innings today. He started sharp but then appeared to B2R to over-throw. Cole was able to make adjustments on the mound though which is tough to do. I liked Cole's stuff and his fight on the mound. B2R sees a lot of good things from Cole as he continues to develop his craft. He isn't the tallest guy on the team but the smaller guys usually have the most fight in them. I can't wait to see Cole again. Very impressed with his upside today.

Jimmy McElwain came into the game and battled through like an upperclassman should. He was about to finish his 2nd complete inning but an error kept the inning alive for SBU and Coach Loe wanted to different match-up. The B2R was very impressed with Jimmy and felt he did an exemplary job of stopping the boat from taking in more water. The B2R has always been a Jimmy McElwain fan. Today was another example why Jimmy is a B2R guy. You stick a guy in a battle when the odds are against him and watch him fight out of it. Jimmy fights. Love that outta him.

Bryce Shea hasn't had much opportunity in 2017. When he got the call to come into the game, I was excited to see him take advantage of that opportunity. Bryce was the Bryce of old, inducing weak grounders and bad contact with his trademark submarine style. Bryce had the best statistics of the day for your Northwest pitching staff and worked 1.1 inning without allowing a run. The silver lining in this series could very well be Bryce Shea if something clicked and everything is in sync with his delivery. Bryce's performance was fantastic. The B2R is really excited to see him get another opportunity to see how he does there because that would give Coach Loe two submarine-style pitchers to compliment his hard throwing 3/4's delivery relievers. Bookmark this entry of the B2R - If Bryce Shea tweaked his engine so his Ferrari of a delivery is in tune, your Bearcat bullpen went from best ever to completely unhittable in my opinion.

Logan Moose's statistics are not going to be flattering but the B2R really liked his performance on the mound today. He was a schmidge away from a called third strike with 2 batters in his performance. Logan is going to be a success in life. He is a hard worker. The whole Bearcat team was rooting for the kid from the dugout and the field. That is evidence the guy is a good teammate and takes advantage of his God-given talent. He is a great guy. A couple of adjustments and he gets out of the inning without a run in my opinion. The B2R was impressed with Logan's fight and demeanor on the mound in this game.

Ross Davis did not have much of a chance to show his stuff in this game. When he came into the game, the SBU Bearcats were steamrolling to a 10-run advantage. The B2R was happy to see Ross get the opportunity to pitch. Despite the outcome, Ross has good velocity on his pitches with what looks to me to be a nice slurve or cutter. The B2R was happy to see Ross on the mound and look forward to his development for more opportunities in the future.

Offensively, Ozzie Adams, Landon Figg, and Luke Hassman were Northwest's most valuable players in the game. Ozzie Adams went 2 for 4 and scored 2 runs in the game. Landon Figg went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI and scored 2 runs in the game. Luke Hassman went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI and scored 1 run on the day. Luke Wilkinson went 1 for 2 as a late-game defensive substitution at first base. Wilkinson also scored 1 run in the game. Aaron Barratt earned the start in right field and went 1 for 4 with 1 RBI on the day. Kolby Greenslade went 1 for 3 with a walk in the game. Logan Rycraft also made things happen by earning a walk and 1 RBI on the day. In total, Northwest scored 6 runs off of 10 hits, 4 RBIs, 2 walks, 6 strike-outs, and left 7 runners on base.

Defensively, Northwest committed 3 errors that led to 1 unearned run in the game.

Pitching, Joseph Hietpas earned the start but picked-up the loss to see his 2017 record move to 4-2. Joseph worked 1.0 inning, allowed 5 hits, 6 runs, 4 walks, 0 strike-outs and 2 wild pitches. Cole Otto came into the game in the 2nd inning and worked 3.0 innings, allowed 1 hit, 3 runs, 5 walks, 2 strike-outs, 1 wild pitch and he hit 1 batter. In the 5th inning, Jimmy McElwain came into the game and worked 1.2 inning, allowed 3 hits, 2 runs (only 1 earned), no walks and 1 strike-out. In the 6th inning with 2 outs, Bryce Shea came into the game and worked 1.1 inning, allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk and 1 strike-out. In the 8th inning, Logan Moose came into the game and worked 0.1 inning, allowed 2 hits, 4 runs, 2 walks, 0 strike-outs and 1 wild pitch. Ross Davis then came into the game and worked 0.1 inning, allowed 2 hits, 2 runs and no walks or strike-outs.
Next - Northwest and Southwest Baptist conclude their 3-game series on Saturday, April 14th in Bolivar at 1pm. The game will be a single, 9-inning contest between the two Bearcat squads.

The B2R expects a Northwest victory in Game 3 because the troubles that confronted our boys are an easy fix: play some cards, grab a football and scrimmage in the hotel parking lot, pour hot sauce in some poor freshman's drink and get back to having fun. Baseball is not like football, basketball, or any other sport where you are supposed to succeed more times than not. You don't get to run out the clock when you have a lead late in the game. You have to give your opponent his chance. You are going to fail at the plate most of the time. If Northwest can get back to having fun by stop pressing or being frustrated with an out or a call against them then Game 3 is ours and the rest of the MIAA slate is so, too.

SBU wins Game 1, 7-4

Bolivar, Mo. - Southwest Baptist scored 4 runs in the first inning and never looked back as the purple Bearcats beat Northwest 7-4 in Game 1 at Bolivar on Thursday. Anthony Caenepeel earned the start but had a tough day as SBU was able to bunch a few singles and an extra base hit or two to score the runs in the first. After the first, Caenepeel was able to keep the purple Bearcats off the board in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th innings. In the 5th inning, Northwest managed to score a few runs to close the SBU lead to a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the 5th. In the bottom of the 5th, the first SBU batter singled to center field and Coach Loe brought in Quinten VanAckeren to limit any further damage. SBU managed to score 2 more runs while Q was on the mound to make the score 6-3. With runners on first and second and 1 out, Coach Loe brought in Jacob Wagner to get Northwest out of the inning. Wags struck out the next batter for the 2nd out. Jacob then had the very next batter fly out to left field to end the inning. After the 5th, SBU led Northwest 6-3. Southwest would tack on another run in the 6th to make the sure 7-3. Northwest made things interesting in the 9th. Northwest scored 1 run and had the bases loaded with Luke Hassman at the plate. Big Luke was swinging the bat well. There were Northwest fans cheering him on from behind the left field fence with gloves in hand ready to catch a bomb. In the end, Luke's swung his mighty bat and didn't quite have the distance as Southwest caught the fly ball to end the game, 7-4.

Game 2 is Friday, April 14th, 2pm, in Bolivar. The B2R has a good feeling about Game 2. Go Cats.

Offensively, Landon Figg was Northwest's most valuable player. Figg went 2 for 3 with 2 walks, 2 RBIs and scored 1 run in the game. Garrett Fort went 2 for 5 and scored 1 run on the day. Luke Hassman went 2 for 5 with 1 RBI in the game. James Holler earned 2 walks on the day. Logan Rycraft went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored in the game. "Mr. On-base percentage" Ozzie Adams earned a hit on the day. In total, Northwest scored 4 runs off of 9 hits, 3 RBIs, 4 walks, 5 strike-outs, and left 9 runners on base.

Defensively, Northwest committed 2 errors in the game.

Pitching, Anthony Caenepeel picked-up the loss to see his 2017 record move to 5-5. In total, Caenepeel worked 4.0 innings, allowed 9 hits, 5 runs, 4 walk, 3 strike-outs and 1 wild pitch. Austin Battaglia worked 2.0 innings, allowed 1 hit, no runs, no walks and struck-out 2 batters.

Next - The Bearcat clash continues with Game 2 on Friday and Game 3 on Saturday. Expect an epic finish between these two hot baseball teams.

Western defeats Northwest 10-5

St. Joseph, Mo. - A tough day at the ballpark ended Northwest's winning streak as Missouri Western won 10-5 in St. Joseph on Tuesday. A combination of the Bearcats' trademark defense with a tough day in 3 errors, an obstruction call for Northwest's first baseman colliding with the Western runner rounding first, bats that started strong but faded until the game was out of reach, and pitching that caught too much of the plate all contributed to the loss. All in all, tip your cap to Western, put it on the record, then forget about it as a day where the breaks were against the boys.

Offensively, James Holler and Luke Hassman were Northwest's most valuable players in the game. Holler went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI in the game. Hassman went 2 for 5 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored in the game. Garrett Fort went 1 for 4 with 1 RBI, 1 walk and 1 run scored on the day. Landon Figg went 1 for 4 with 1 RBI, 1 run scored and 1 walk in the game. Ozzie Adams and Jay Hrdlicka each had a hit in the game. Kolby Greenslade went 1 for 4 with 1 run scored on the day. Logan Rycraft hit a double, earned a walk and scored a run in the game. In total, Northwest scored 5 runs off of 10 hits, 4 RBIs, 3 walks, 7 strike-outs, and left 10 runners on base.

Defensively, Northwest committed 3 errors in the game.

Pitching, Eddy Kraber earned the start but picked-up a loss to see his 2017 record go to 2-1. In total, Eddy worked 3.1 inning, allowed 9 hits, 4 runs, 1 walk, 1 strike-out and hit 1 batter. Quintin VanAckeren came into the game and worked 2.0 innings, allowed 1 hit, 1 run, 0 walks and 4 strike-outs in the game. Jacob Wagner came into the game in the 6th inning and worked 0.2 of an inning, allowed 3 hits and 1 run in the game. In the 7th inning, Austin Battaglia came into the game and worked 1.0 inning, allowed 1 hit, 1 run, 2 walks, 1 strike-out and 2 wild pitches.
