SBU wins Game 1, 7-4

Bolivar, Mo. - Southwest Baptist scored 4 runs in the first inning and never looked back as the purple Bearcats beat Northwest 7-4 in Game 1 at Bolivar on Thursday. Anthony Caenepeel earned the start but had a tough day as SBU was able to bunch a few singles and an extra base hit or two to score the runs in the first. After the first, Caenepeel was able to keep the purple Bearcats off the board in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th innings. In the 5th inning, Northwest managed to score a few runs to close the SBU lead to a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the 5th. In the bottom of the 5th, the first SBU batter singled to center field and Coach Loe brought in Quinten VanAckeren to limit any further damage. SBU managed to score 2 more runs while Q was on the mound to make the score 6-3. With runners on first and second and 1 out, Coach Loe brought in Jacob Wagner to get Northwest out of the inning. Wags struck out the next batter for the 2nd out. Jacob then had the very next batter fly out to left field to end the inning. After the 5th, SBU led Northwest 6-3. Southwest would tack on another run in the 6th to make the sure 7-3. Northwest made things interesting in the 9th. Northwest scored 1 run and had the bases loaded with Luke Hassman at the plate. Big Luke was swinging the bat well. There were Northwest fans cheering him on from behind the left field fence with gloves in hand ready to catch a bomb.
