Featured Rookie - Ozzie Adams

Featured Rookie - Ozzie Adams

Maryville, Mo. - The B2R is pleased to feature Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats baseball team rookies this season. The first featured rookie is second baseman Ozzie Adams. I mean, who calls themselves an American that cannot love a middle infielder with the name, Ozzie, right? Add in his curly blonde locks and a million dollar smile and you have a real life celebrity on campus. Ozzie has made quite an impact in less than one full academic year on the campus of Northwest Missouri State University. Ozzie earned the starting job at second base and has been batting second in many games. Ozzie is a transfer student from Kirkwood Community College and comes to Northwest as a Junior. The 5'9" tall, 175 lbs kid hails from Clear Lake, Iowa.

So far in 2016, Ozzie has started all 12 games of the season for Northwest. Ozzie has played every game at second base. Ozzie is batting .283 with 46 official plate appearances, 11 runs scored, 13 hits, 5 RBIs, 1 double, 5 walks, 2 stolen bases in 3 attempts, has been hit by a pitch 3 times, 2 sacrifice hits, .304 slugging %, .389 on-base %, and has only committed 2 errors in that time.

B2R thoughts - Ozzie has big shoes to fill with Paul Johnson's graduation after the 2015 season. The B2R's initial observations of Ozzie are (1) great kid, (2) hard worker, (3) blue collar, (4) great team guy, (5) humble, and (6) wants to win a conference championship. Look for great things out of Ozzie Adams in 2016. For all those kids that may not have 6-foot + tall parents, Ozzie is a role model to see how hard work developing talent into skill will make you successful in the MIAA and college baseball. You have to have the will to win and never give up. Ozzie personifies that hard work and tenacity. Ladies and Gentlemen, the B2R is pleased to introduce Ozzie Adams to the Bearcat Nation.

Northeastern State salvages Game 3, wins 9-2

Northeastern State salvages Game 3, wins 9-2

Maryville, Mo. - On a windy yet beautifully sunny Sunday afternoon, the Northeastern State Riverhawks defeated Northwest Missouri State University 9-2 to salvage Game 3 of the series in Maryville. The game took 2 hours and 45 minutes to play in front of 107 fans at Bearcat baseball field. Northeastern State came out of the gate swinging and Northwest could not match-up with the Riverhawks.  Northwest's pitching could not contain NESU, nor could the Bearcat offense break through the Riverhawk pitching staff on Sunday. With Sunday's loss, Northwest's 2016 record fell to 7-5, 2-1 MIAA.

Offense - Nick Gotta was the team's offensive MVP of the game on Sunday. In total, Go-Go-Gotta went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI, 1 stolen base, and 1 walk in the game. Garrett Fort went 1 for 4 (a double) with 1 run scored and was hit by a pitch in the game. Ozzie Adams went 1 for 4 with 1 RBI in the game. Nick Howard went 1 for 3 (a double) in the game. Dane Appel went 1 for 1 in the game in a pinch hitting role. Kevin Handzlik went 1 for 2 in the game. Kolby Greenslade went 1 for with 1 stolen base and 1 run scored in the game. In total, Northwest scored 2 runs off of 8 hits, 2 RBIs, 1 walk, and left 8 runners on base.

Defense - Northwest was charged with 1 error (Howard) which led to 3 unearned runs in the game.

Pitching - Northwest's pitching had a tough day on Sunday. Brad Roberts earned the start in the game and worked 4.0 innings, allowed 6 hits, 4 runs (all earned), 3 walks, 3 strike-outs, 0 balks, 0 wild pitches, and he did not hit a batter. Hondo Pearcy came into the game in the 5th inning and worked 2.0 innings, allowed 3 hits, 2 runs (both earned), 1 walk, 0 strike-outs, 0 balks, 0 wild pitches, and he hit a batter in the game. Nikko Pablo came into the game in the 7th inning and worked 1.2 innings, allowed 3 hits, 3 runs (all unearned), 1 walk, 2 strike-outs, 1 wild pitch, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter in the game. Carson Smith came into the game to close it out and worked 1.1 inning, allowed 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 walks, 0 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter in the game.

B2R thoughts - On a windy day, Northwest's pitching did not locate very well and the offense could not keep pace with a swinging Riverhawks team. Sunday is a testament to how important pitching is for this year's NWMSU Bearcats baseball team. If the score is closer, the team probably finds a way to scratch out 4-5 runs in 9 innings. However, if the game gets out of hand, Northwest's offense cannot keep pace with a track meet. Despite the sour ending to the weekend, Northwest had a terrific series with Northeastern State University. Next weekend will be another epic match-up for Northwest as your Bearcats baseball team travels to St. Charles to play Lindenwood in a key MIAA Conference road match-up.
