Northwest nearly wins both, splits with Ft. Hays on Saturday

Your Northwest Bearcats nearly won both games of Saturday's Double-header in cold Hays, Kansas, but ended-up splitting with Ft. Hays State in two exciting games.  In game one, Northwest lead the entire game but the Tigers kept it close until FHSU scored the go ahead runs in the bottom of the final frame to win 7-6.  In game 2, your Bearcats had a little comeback magic of their own to win the game.  Northwest was trailing 3-0 going into the 4th inning but your Bearcats' offense scored 5 runs in the top half of the inning.  Northwest would then score an additional two runs in the 5th inning to expand the lead.  FHSU would add two runs late but it wasn't enough and your Bearcats won game 2 by the score 7-5.  With the split, your Bearcats 2014 record stands at 14-9, 10-6 MIAA.

In game 1, Northwest lost the game 7-6 in a very exciting game.  Ft. Hays kept scratching and clawing to stay in the game and was able to score the winning runs in the bottom of the last inning.  Your starting Bearcat nine was Brandon Huske, SS, Paul Johnson, 2B, Ryan Abernathy, CF, Eric McLaughlin, DH, Austin Wulff, LF, Steven Garber, 1B, Jon Pomatto, RF, Blade Hardegree, C, Zack Ferreira, 3B, and your starting pitcher was Austin Warren.

Offensively, Northwest scored 6 runs off of 6 hits, 3 RBIs, 1 walk, 7 strike-outs, and left 3 runners on base.  Your offensive star of the game was Paul Johnson, who went 2 for 4 (including a double) with a RBI and a run scored.  Also in the game, Steven Garber went 1 for 2 (a double) with a walk and two runs scored.  Brandon Huske, Austin Wulff, and Zack Ferreira all earned a hit in the game.

Defensively, the Bearcats were charged with three errors (Johnson, Garber, and Pomatto) and they turned one double play.

Pitching, Austin Warren earned the start in the game and worked 3.2 innings, allowed 7 hits, 2 runs (1 earned), 2 walks, 4 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter.  Blane Reutter came into the game in the 4th inning to relieve Warren and worked 2.1 innings, allowed 5 hits, 3 runs (all earned), 0 walks, 2 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he hit one batter.  Jon Pomatto came into the game in the 7th and final frame, worked 0.2 innings, allowed 2 hits, 2 runs (both earned), 2 walks, 0 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter.

Spirit of the Bearcat MVP of the double-header - Bex Trout was passionately cheering on the team the entire day.  He was hoarse in the second game.  He was pacing from the dugout, to the bullpen, and all points in between.  He was cheering and encouraging the guys the entire time.  Bex was - A.  1.  Awesome.

Next for the Bearcats - Northwest plays the 4th and final game of the series against Ft Hays on Sunday, March 23, 2014.  First pitch is set for 1pm.
