Western wins Game 2

St. Joseph, Mo. - The Missouri Western Griffons baseball team defeated Northwest 12-2 on Tuesday, April 19, 2016, in St. Joseph, Missouri. With the loss, Northwest's record falls to 21-18, 16-13 MIAA. Northwest remains tied for 5th place in the MIAA baseball standings with Missouri Southern because the Lions lost to Pitt State on the same day as the Bearcats. With 10 conference games left in the 2016 NCAA regular season, the Bearcats are 2.0 games ahead of 9th place (non-playoffs) Nebraska-Kearney.

In Game 2 versus Western, Northwest's starting pitching had a tough day. Western's offense jumped on starter Austin Battaglia early and Northwest's offense could not keep up with the Griffons. Western is the hottest team in the MIAA right now and has won 8 games in a row. Western is making a late season charge for 1st place Central Missouri and is only 3 games back with 10 games left in the season.

Offense - Nick Gotta and Ozzie Adams were Game 2's MVPs for Northwest. Gotta went 2 for 4 (including a double) and a run scored in the game. Ozzie Adams went 2 for 3 (including a double) with a RBI and a walk in the game. Kevin Handzlik also had a good game and went 1 for 2 with 1 RBI and 1 walk in the game. Aaron Barratt was the only other Bearcat to earn a hit in the game and went 1 for 3. In total, Northwest scored 2 runs off of 6 hits, 2 RBIs, 6 walks, 6 strike-outs, and left 6 runners on base.

Defense - Northwest was charged with 1 error in the game according to the box score that led to 2 unearned runs.

Pitching - Austin Battaglia earned the start in Game 2 for Northwest. Austin had a tough day as the Griffons scored early against him in his outing. Austin's 2016 record falls to 1-3 with the loss. In total, Austin worked 1.1 inning, allowed 7 hits, 7 runs (6 earned), 1 walk, 2 strike-outs, 1 wild pitch, 0 balks, and did not hit a batter. Nikko Pablo came into the game in the 2nd inning and did an outstanding job of keeping the game within reach. It is Nikko's second quality outing of relief following his 4.0 inning performance in the Southwest Baptist series. In total, Nikko worked 3.2 innings, allowed 3 hits, 1 unearned run, 0 walks, 2 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he hit one batter. In the 6th inning, Jimmy McElwain came into the game for 1.0 inning of work and allowed 2 hits, 2 runs (both earned), 0 walks, 0 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter. In the 7th inning, Jacob Wagner came into the game and worked 1.0 inning, allowed 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 walks, 0 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter. In the 8th, Bryce Shea came into the game but had a tough day. Shea worked 0.1 of an inning before allowing the 10th run differential in the game. In total, Shea worked 0.1 of an inning, allowed 3 hits, 2 runs (both earned), 1 walk, 0 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter in the game. 


Next - Your Northwest Bearcat baseball team will travel to Edmond, Oklahoma, this Friday for a crucial 3-game road series with the University of Central Oklahoma. Game 1 of the series is Friday, April 22, 2016, at 3pm. Game 2 is Saturday, April 23, 2016, at 1pm. Game 3 is Sunday, April 24, 2016, at 2pm.
