CARDIAC CATS ARE BACK!! WINS 3-2 IN EXTRAS IN GAME 1

Maryville, Mo. - The Cardiac Cats returned in dramatic form on Friday, April 15, 2016, to defeat Southwest Baptist 3-2 in extra innings to win Game 1 of the series in Maryville. Wow, what a game. Nikko Pablo probably turned in his best performance in 2016 with 4 huge innings of relief to keep the game tied at 2-2. In total, 130 fans were treated to the well-played and thrilling game between two squads fighting for the play-offs. The weather was outstanding and reached the mid-70s with sunny skies. The game took nearly 3 hours to complete, but oh what a finish it was for Game 1.

Offense - Aaron Barratt was Northwest's MVP in Game 1. Aaron went 2 for 4 with 1 run scored in the game. Nick Gotta earned a hit in the game. Garrett Fort earned a walk and scored a run in the game. Ozzie Adams went 1 for 4 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored in the game. James Holler went 1 for 4 with 1 RBI and 1 walk in the game. Kevin Handzlik went 1 for 3 with 1 walk and 1 sacrifice in the game. Jake Lewis went 1 for 4 (a double) with 1 walk and 1 sacrifice in the game. Kolby Greenslade went 1 for 2 (a double) with 1 walk in the game. In total, Northwest scored 3 runs off of 8 hits, 2 RBIs, 5 walks, 3 strike-outs, and left 9 runners on base. 

Defense - Northwest was not charged with an error in the game.

Pitching - Joseph Hietpas worked 5.2 innings, allowed 3 hits, 2 runs (both earned), 5 walks, 6 strike-outs, 1 wild pitch, 0 balks, and 0 hit by pitches. Nikko Pablo worked 4.0 innings, allowed 2 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk, 4 strike-outs, 1 wild pitch, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter. Carson Smith worked the final out and it was enough to pick-up the win in the game to see his 2016 record climb to 4-3. In total, Carson worked 0.1 of an inning, allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 0 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter in the game. 


MIAA standings & Magic Number - With Game 1's victory over Southwest Baptist, Northwest is now 14-12 in the MIAA and in 7th place. At this moment, with several variables still in play, Northwest's magic number is 7. There are play-offs possible with 6 more conference wins but the B2R's estimates 7 more conference wins is a guarantee play-off spot.

Next - Northwest plays Game 2 with Southwest Baptist on Saturday, April 16, 2016, at 2pm, on the campus of the Northwest Missouri State University at Bearcat baseball field.
