Opposition Research - Missouri Southern Lions
Maryville, Mo. - Your Northwest Missouri State University Bearcat baseball team travels to Joplin, Missouri, to face the Missouri Southern State University Lions in an epic 3-game series this weekend. Both teams are presently tied for 5th place in the MIAA standings. Game 1 is Friday, April 8, at 6pm. Game 2 is Saturday, April 9, at 1pm. Game 3 is Sunday, April 10, at 1pm. The Lions bring their traditional offensive powerhouse team back to Joplin to face the pitching and defense of Northwest Missouri State. In this season, the Lions have a comparable pitching rotation, 'pen, and defense. Which team's defense will blink first? Tune in and find out this weekend.

MSSU - The Lions are presently 22-9, 12-9 MIAA. The Lions are presently ranked #19 in the Country despite being pre-season ranked #1 by the MIAA baseball coaches and as high as #7 in the nation in NCAA Division 2. While the Lions may have not had the success they envisioned at this point in the season, Missouri Southern is an incredible baseball program.
The Lions return the MIAA Pitcher of the Year in 2015, Cody Hutchinson. Hutchinson has had a tough go of it at this point in the 2016 season with a 7.22 ERA, 3-4 w-l record, only averaging between 4-5 innings per start but has a high strike-out to walk ratio of 2-1 with 32 strike-outs and 16 walks. Lions Head Coach Bryce Darnell is a fiery guy and the reigning MIAA Coach of the Year from the 2015 season. As best as the B2R can describe, Darnell is the same mold of coach as Auggie Garrido of the University of Texas. In addition, Payton Walker, All-American in 2015, Jesse Rall, All-American in 2015, and Chris Hoffman, All-American in 2015, all return to Southern's line-up in 2016.

NWMSU - Your Northwest Bearcats are 12-9 in Conference at this point in the season despite being pre-season ranked #12 by the MIAA baseball coaches. The Bearcats' offense is led by Kevin Handzlik with his .348 batting average, .449 slugging %, and .425 on-base %. In addition, veterans Derek Meyer is batting .319 with a .431 slugging % and .402 on-base %, reigning MIAA player of the week James Holler is batting .313, with a .537 slugging % and .352 on-base percentage, and Kolby Greenslade is batting .305 with a .356 slugging % and a .344 on-base percentage. As a team, Northwest is batting .276 with a .367 slugging percentage and a .376 on-base percentage.
With regards to pitching, Joe Hietpas, Anthony Caenepeel, and Hondo Pearcy have been leading the way statistically for Northwest in 2016. Caenepeel has a 3.16 ERA, Hietpas has a 3.51 ERA, and Hondo has a 3.94 ERA so far in 2016. The Bearcats have been blessed with a quality closer in Carson Smith. Carson's 1.86 ERA, 3-3 w-l record, and 3 saves, has won many games for Northwest this season. Jimmy McElwain has also been a reliable arm out of the bullpen this season with his 4.15 ERA in his appearances. In total, Northwest has a team ERA of 4.86 and opponents' batting average is .270.
Defensively, Northwest has struggled in recent weeks and have seen their fielding percentage dip to .959. Whether it is a trend of a blip on the radar will remain to be seen but traditionally the Bearcats have been an exemplary defensive baseball team. In the series against Southern, the Bearcats defense will need to return to form to contain the mighty Lions offense.
