Washburn wins Game 2, 3-0, Rubber match Saturday

Washburn wins Game 2, 3-0, Rubber match Saturday

Topeka, KS - The Washburn Ichabods defeated Northwest on Friday in Topeka by the score 3-0 to even the series at 1-1. Northwest had outstanding pitching from Anthony Caenepeel, Austin Battaglia, and John Osborne, but defensive errors, unearned runs, and no run support resulted in a Washburn victory. Defensive lapses contributed to 2 of the 3 runs allowed by Northwest. Regardless, the Bearcats offense could not get the timely hit when we needed it to score any runs. While Northwest certainly had chances in this case to score runs - 9 runners were left on base - Washburn pitching kept Northwest in check. Actually, both teams' pitchers were outstanding in this game. The game only took 2 hours and 1 minute to complete on another gorgeous sunny and 70 degrees day in Topeka, Kansas.

The key inning in this game came in the top of the 2nd inning:

With 0 outs, Northwest's Kevin Handzlik singled to put a runner at 1st. Jake Lewis then singled to put runners on 1st and 2nd, still with 0 outs. Aaron Barratt singled to load the bases, still with 0 outs. Washburn then clamps down and a fly-out, ground out pitcher to catcher, and a strike-out, ended the Bearcat scoring threat without allowing any runs.

Offense - Aaron Barratt was Northwest's offensive MVP on Friday. In total, Barratt went 3 for 4 and 1 stolen base while playing right field in the game. Kevin Handzlik went 2 for 4 in the game as Northwest's third baseman. Ozzie Adams went 1 for 3 while playing second base. Jake Lewis went 1 for 4 while playing first base. In total, Northwest did not score off of 7 hits, 0 RBIs, 0 walks, 8 strike-outs, and left 9 runners on base.

Defense - Northwest was charged with 2 errors (Douglas and Greenslade) which led to 2 unearned runs in the game. Northwest turned 1 double play in the game.

Pitching - Anthony Caenepeel earned the start on Friday versus Washburn but did not have any run support and picked-up a tough luck loss to see his 2016 record fall to 1-4. In total, Caenepeel worked 6.0 innings, allowed 7 hits, 3 runs (only 1 earned), 3 walks, 4 strike-outs, 1 wild pitch, 1 balk, and he did not hit a batter in the game. Austin Battaglia came into the game in the 7th inning and worked 1.1 inning, allowed 1 hit, 0 runs, 1 walk, 0 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter. With 1 out in the 8th inning, John Osborne came into the game and worked 0.2 of an inning, allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 1 strike-out, 0 wild pitch, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter.
