B2R Analysis - Your Northwest Missouri State Bearcats continue their impressive streak playing NCAA play-off caliber non-conference opponents in 2016. Statistically speaking, the two teams cancel each other out in pitching with QU throwing a 3.78 team ERA and NW throwing a 3.72 team ERA. Defensively, QU is struggling with a team fielding percentage of .946 while NW comes in at .974. Offensively, QU is very explosive with a team batting average of .333, team slugging .546, and team on-base of .404. NW has a team batting average of .245, team slugging of .318, and a team on-base of .348.

The B2R is extremely excited to see which pitcher will get the starting nod for the mid-week game. The three pitchers that come to mind are as follows:

(1) Hondo Pearcy with his 3.38 ERA, 3 appearances, 5.1 innings pitched, 3 hits, 2 runs (both earned), 1 walk, 2 strike-outs, and opposing batting average of .176;

(2) Nikko Pablo, 4.34 ERA, 9 appearances, 18.2 innings pitched, allowed 16 hits, 12 runs (9 earned), 10 walks, 17 strike-outs, and opposing batting average of .254;

(3) Austin Battaglia, 7.50 ERA, 1-1 W-L record, 5 appearances, 6 innings pitched, allowed 4 hits, 6 runs (5 earned), 6 walks, 5 strike-outs, and opposing batting average of .200.

Completely just thinking out loud here: The B2R wonders if Brad Roberts gets the mid-week start since he did not go very deep this past Sunday. But, that would put him on the mound in just 3 days rest when he is used to 7 days between games. It would also give him only 5 days rest for his next scheduled start against Lincoln University on Sunday, March 20, 2016. This means he would pitch twice on short rest compared to what his body is used to resting. The B2R thinks it is probably a long shot that Brad gets the start but it is an interesting discussion.

Regardless of who starts, the discussion worth having is whether whomever the Bearcat pitcher is given the opportunity to pitch, whether he can take advantage of the opportunity, shut down a very talented offense, and make a case for a weekend 3 starter position. Kudos to Coach Darin Loe for giving guys multiple opportunities to earn their way to more playing time. I can't wait to see how the Bearcat pitchers do against Quincy. Who will step up? Who will take advantage of the opportunity? Stay tuned.

Keys to victory for Northwest is (1) guys on base (walks or knocks); (2) execute defensively to limit pitch count (no extra outs); (3) base-running (force QU into defensive errors); and (4) Starting pitcher get into the 6th inning with 3 runs or less.
