Lopers score 16, beats Bearcats in Kearney

Kearney, NE - The Bearcats may have given an inch or two but the Lopers kicked it wide open for a lopsided victory on Tuesday, March 22, 2016, in Kearney, by the final score 16-5. It only took to the bottom of the 7th inning, 2 hours and 30 minutes, for the Lopers to run rule the Bearcats. The game started well enough for Northwest as Hondo Pearcy breezed through the first 3 innings by only allowing 1 run. The next 3+ innings were the Bearcats downfall as neither Northwest's pitching or defense performed well. The Lopers offense was too much for the Bearcats to contain after UNK had a little life breathed into them by Bearcat errors. This game meant a lot to both squads. Nebraska-Kearney actually brought in their closer in the 6th inning to finish the game. In the end, its one game and only one game. There are approximately 39 MIAA Conference games on the Bearcats 2016 schedule. This weekend is a big series against Central Missouri. Tip your cap to the Lopers then get ready for the Mules.

Offense - Derek Meyer and Kolby Greenslade were your offensive MVPs for Northwest on Tuesday. Derek went 2 for 3 (including a double) with 1 RBI and 1 run scored in the game. Kolby Greenslade went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI, 1 stolen base, and 1 run scored in the game. Ozzie Adams went 1 for with 1 walk, 1 stolen base, and 1 run scored while playing second base. Jake Lewis went 1 for 3 with 1 RBI while playing first base. Aaron Barratt went 1 for 3 with a run scored while playing left field. In total, Northwest scored 5 runs off of 7 hits, 3 RBIs, 2 walks, 3 strike-outs, and left 4 runners on base.

Defense - Northwest had a tough day on defense against the Lopers. In total, Northwest was charged with 4 errors (Handzlik, Adams, Fort, and Pearcy) that led to 4 unearned runs. Northwest did not turn a double play.

Offense - Hondo Pearcy earned the start against Nebraska-Kearney on Tuesday. Hondo did a great job through 3 innings but ran into trouble in the 4th. In total, Hondo worked 3.2 innings, allowed 4 hits, 4 runs (only 1 earned), 2 walks, 5 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and hit 1 batter. Nikko Pablo came into the game in the 4th inning but picked-up the loss in the game to see his 2016 record fall to 1-1. In total, Nikko worked 1.2 innings, allowed 2 hits, 3 runs (only 2 earned), 2 walks, 2 strike-outs, 1 wild pitch, 0 balks, and he hit 1 batter. Bryce Shea came into the game on or about the 6th inning and worked 1.1 innings, allowed 6 hits, 7 runs (all earned), 2 walks, 1 strike-out, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter in the game. Jacob Wagner came into the game and did not record an out as he walked the only batter he faced. The batter would come around to score. In total, Wagner threw 0.0 of an inning, allowed 1 earned run and 1 walk. Austin Battaglia came into the game in the 7th inning with the bases loaded. In total, Austin did not record an out, allowed 1 hit and 1 earned run in the game.

Final thoughts - Northwest is a really good baseball team. Baseball is one of those sports where the personality of a baseball team is like a tea bag, you only see what you get when you put it in hot water. The Bearcats have wonderful opportunity ahead of them. A point worth reminding is the MIAA baseball coaches picked Northwest to finish 12th this season. The Cats were playing for 3rd place on Tuesday. The B2R says the Cats should take the number 12 and shove it right back in their faces. Screw'em. This is our year.

Go Cats!!
