Series Preview - Pittsburgh State University Gorillas

The Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats baseball team travels to Pittsburgh, Kansas, to play a crucial 3-game series versus the Pittsburgh State Gorillas.  Northwest needs to win all 3 games, plus get some help, to claim a play-off spot in the MIAA Conference post-season tournament.  Pitt State currently holds the 8th and final play-off spot for the conference post-season tournament.  Both teams must win as 3 other schools are between Pitt State's 8th place and Northwest's 12th place for the play-offs.  The 'Cats and Gorillas will play a double header on Saturday with the first pitch set for 3pm.  The two square off for game 3 at 1 o'clock pm on Sunday.

Pitt State are 2-6 in their last 8 games while Northwest has won 7 straight games.  Offensively, Pitt has 6 regulars batting .309 or better, 7 regulars slugging .406 or better, 8 regulars on-base .359 or better.  As a team, Pitt is batting .314, slugging .453, on-base .395, and stolen 62 bases in 90 attempts.  Defensively, Pitt is fielding .961 and average 1.30 errors per game.

Pitt has remarkable starting pitching in 2013.  Four of the regular starters have 2.52, 3.29, 5.63, and 5.75 ERAs, respectively.  Pitt's bullpen is extremely good, too, save, perhaps, the closer, with Ryan McKay appearing in 25 games, 3 saves, no starts, and a sparkling 1.63 ERA.  The pitcher with the most saves this season for the Gorillas has struggled and possesses a 10+ ERA.  As a team, Pitt has 4.82 ERA, more then 2 strike outs for every walk, and opponents are batting .289 against them.

Northwest is batting .289 as a team with three regulars batting .310 or better, 8 regulars slugging .404 or better, 9 regulars on-base .353 or better, and steal 60 bases on 83 attempts.  Defensively, Northwest is fielding at a .970 percent and average a little over 1 error per game.

Pitching, NWMSU has a team ERA of 6.10 and strike out more then 2 batter for every walk.
