Bearcats sweep Nebraska-Kearney in thrilling mid-week clash

The Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats baseball team won both games of a double header against the University of Nebraska at Kearney in Kearney, Nebraska, on Tuesday, April 16, 2013.  In game 1, Northwest beat the Lopers by a score 4-3.  With the win, Northwest's 2013 record advanced to 15-25, 12-22 MIAA.  With the loss, UNK's 2013 record fell to 19-19, 16-16 MIAA.

Offensively, Eric Swain, 3B, went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI in the game.  Tyler Durant, RF, went 2 for 4 with a run scored in the game.  Ryan Abernathy, CF, went 1 for 2 (including a double) with 2 walks, a stolen base, and a run scored.  Eric McGlauflin went 1 for 3 with 2 stolen bases and 2 runs scored in the game.  Charlie Krueger, PH/LF, went 1 for 1 with a RBI and a walk.  Paul Johnson, LF, went 0 for 2 but had a RBI.  In total, the Bearcats scored 4 runs off of 7 hits, 3 RBIs, 5 walks, 3 strike outs, and left 6 runners on base.

Defensively, Northwest did not commit an error and executed a double play in the game.

Pitching, Austin Warren earned the start in the game and pitched a gem.  Northwest scored a run in the 1st inning and UNK did not score any runs.  After 1 inning, Northwest led 1-0.  Neither team scored any runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings.  Heading into the 4th inning, Northwest led 1-0.  In the top of the 4th inning, Northwest scored 2 more runs to take a 3-0 lead.  In the bottom of the 4th inning, UNK scored 3 runs to tie the game at 3-3.  Neither team scored any runs in the 5th inning to keep the scored tied at 3-3.  In the 6th inning, Northwest did not score any runs.  In the bottom of the 6th inning, the first UNK batter doubled to left field.  The second UNK batter flew out to right field.  With one out in the 6th inning, Blane Reutter came in from the 'pen.  In total, Austin worked 5.1 innings, allowed 7 hits, 3 runs (all earned), 0 walks, 2 strike outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and hit one batter.  With a runner on 2nd and one out in the bottom of the 6th, Blane got the 3rd UNK batter to ground out to 2nd base and advanced the runner to 3rd base.  The 4th UNK batter grounded out to the 2nd baseman to end the inning.  In the end, UNK did not score any runs in the 6th inning to keep the scored tied 3-3.  In the 7th inning, Neither team scored any more runs.  In the bottom of the 7th inning, the first UNK batter singled to RF.  The second UNK batter sacrificed himself to advance the runner to 2nd base for the first out.  The third UNK batter grounded out 3B to 1B for the 2nd out.  Nathanial Horton came in the game at this point.  In total, Blane Reutter worked 1.1 innings, allowed 1 hit, 0 runs, 1 walk, 0 strike outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and did not hit a batter.  With 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th inning, Horton got the 4th UNK batter to strike out swinging to end the inning tied 3-3.  In the top of the 8th inning, Northwest scored 1 more run to take the lead 4-3.  In the bottom of the 8th inning, Horton struck out the first two UNK batters.  The 3rd UNK batter singled to left center field.  The 4th UNK batter flied out to CF for the 3rd out and ended the game with the final score 4-3.  In total, Hort worked 1.1 innings, allowed 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 walks, 3 strike outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and did not hit a batter.

In game 2, Northwest beat the Lopers 7-1 to complete the 2-game sweep.  With the win, Northwest's 2013 record advances to 16-25, 13-22 MIAA.  With the loss, UNK fell to 19-20, 16-17 MIAA.

Offensively, Eric Swain, 3B, went 2 for 3 (including a double and a triple) with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored.  Eric McGlauflin, DH, went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI.  Derek Meyer, C, went 2 for 3 with a run scored and a walk.  Ryan Abernathy, CF, went 1 for 3 with a RBI and a walk.  Cameron Bedard, 2B, went 1 for 4 with a RBI and a run scored.  Brandon Huske, SS, went 0 for 2 with 2 walks and 2 runs scored.  In total, Northwest scored 7 runs off of 8 hits, 6 RBIs, 5 walks, 4 strike outs, and left 8 runners on base.

Defensively, Northwest committed one error (Krueger) and did not execute a double play in the game.

Pitching, Rob Henrichs earned the start and win to see his 2013 record advance to 2-1.  Henrichs pitched an absolute gem.  In the first inning, Northwest scored 2 runs and UNK scored one run for a 2-1 Bearcat lead.  Neither team scored any more runs in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th innings.  In the 6th inning, Northwest scored 5 more runs and UNK did not score any runs for a 7-1 Bearcat lead going into the 7th inning.  In the 7th inning, Northwest did not score any more runs.  Patrick Brady came in to pitch the 7th and final frame.  In total, Henrichs worked 6.0 innings, allowed 5 hits, 1 run (earned), 0 walks, 4 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and hit 1 batter.  UNK did not score any runs in the 7th inning to seal the victory for the Bearcats.  In total, Patrick worked 1.0 inning, allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 1 strike out, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and did not hit a batter.
