Series Recap - Bearcats split with Northwestern Oklahoma State

Northwest split a 2-game series with Northwestern Oklahoma State on Monday, February 10, in Canyon, Texas, to open the 2014 NCAA season.  Northwest won game 1 by a score 17-2  but lost game 2, 3-1.  The Cats played 2 seven-inning games on the campus of West Texas A&M due to weather conditions in Alva, Oklahoma.

Game 1 - Northwest won 17-2.

Game 1 Starter - #18 - Fox - P

In the top of the 1st inning, Northwest's offense exploded with 5 runs, 5 hits, and left 2 runners on base.  Brandon Huske started the Cats rolling with a walk.  Paul Johnson then reached on an error by the Rangers pitcher, and moved Huske to second base.  Ryan Abernathy then singled to right field which loaded the bases for Eric McGlauflin.  Eric McGlauflin then struck-out swinging.  Jon Pomatto then singled to center field scoring 2 RBIs (Huske and Johnson).  Abernathy advanced to third base.  Steven Garber then singled to left field which scored Abernathy from third and moved Pomatto to third base.  Garrett Fort reached on a fielder's choice after Pomatto was caught in a pickle between third base and home.  With the run-down, Garber managed to take third base and Fort took second base.  Blake Hardegree then singled to center field scoring 2 runs (Garber and Fort).  Zack Ferreira then singled to third base and advanced Hardegree to second base.  Huske ended the inning with a fly-out to left field to conclude the top half of the inning.

In the bottom of the 1st inning, Ryker Fox walked the first batter.  The second batter grounded-out to the pitcher but advanced the runner to second base in the sacrifice.  The third batter then grounded-out to the shortstop but advanced the runner to third base.  Ryker then struck-out the fourth batter for the 3rd and final out of the winning.  In total, the Rangers did not score any runs, earn any hits, and left 1 runner on base in the bottom of the 1st inning.

In the top of the 2nd inning, Northwest scored 2 runs off of 1 hit and left 3 runners on base.  Paul Johnson singled to third base and then advanced to second base on a throwing error by the third baseman.  Johnson then advanced to third base on a wild pitch.  Abernathy then struck-out swinging for the first out.  McGlauflin was next and got hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners with one out.  Jon Pomatto then struck out swinging for the second out of the game.  McGlauflin then stole second base to put runners on second and third with two outs.  Garber walked to load the bases with two outs.  Fort then walked to score Johnson from third and keep the bases loaded.  The Rangers then brought in a relief pitcher.  Hardegree then walked and scored McGlauflin from third base.  Ferreira then fouled out to the third baseman for the third and final out of the game.

In the bottom of the 2nd inning, the Rangers scored 0 runs off of 1 hit and left 1 runner on base.  The first Ranger batter struck-out looking for the first out.  The second batter then singled to the shortstop.  The third batter then flew-out to the left fielder for the second out.  The fourth batter then struck-out swinging for the third and final out of the inning.

In the top of the 3rd inning, Northwest scored 4 runs off of 1 hit and left 2 runners on base.  Huske led off the inning with a single to left field.  Paul Johnson then walked to put runners on first and second base.  Abernathy then walked to load the bases.  McGlauflin then flied out to right field to score Huske from third base on a sacrifice fly for the first out of the inning.  Johnson took third base on the throw home.  Pomatto then walked to load the bases.  Garber then walked to score Johnson and keep the bases loaded.  Fort then reached on a fielder's choice when he grounded out shortstop to second base to force Garber out.  Two runners scored on the play (Pomatto and Abernathy).  Fort then advanced to third base on a throwing error by the pitcher on a failed pick-off attempt.  Hardegree then walked to put runners on the corners.  Ferreira then grounded-out to the second baseman.

In the bottom of the 3rd, the Rangers cracked the scoreboard and scored 1 run off of 3 hits and left 2 runners on base.  The first batter singled to right field.  The second batter singled to right field, too, and advanced the runner all the way to third base.  With runners on the corners and no outs, the third batter singled to center field and scored 1 runner.  With runners on first and second and no outs, the fourth batter flew-out to right field for the first out of the inning.  The fifth batter struck-out swinging for the second out.  The sixth batter struck-out swinging for the third and final out of the inning.  After three innings, the Bearcats led 11-1.

In the top of the 4th, Northwest scored 6 runs off of 3 hits, and left 3 runners on base.  Huske singled to left field.  Johnson flied out to right field for the first out.  Abernathy was then hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second base with one out.  McGlauflin then tripled to right-center field to score both Huske and Abernathy.  Pomatto then walked to put runners on the corners with one out.  The Rangers then brought in another reliever.  Pomatto then advanced to second base on a pass ball.  Garber struck-out swinging for the second out.  Fort walked to load the bases with two outs.  Hardegree then singled to left-center field to score McGlauflin and Pomatto.  Ferreira then walked to load the bases with two outs.  Huske was then hit by a pitch to score Fort from third base.  Johnson then walked to score Hardegree.  The Rangers then brought in another reliever.  Abernathy then struck-out looking to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 4th, the Rangers did not score any runs, earn any hits, and left one runner on base.  The first batter walked.  The second batter flew-out to center field for the first inning.  The third batter struck-out swinging for the second inning.  The fourth batter then flew-out to right-field for the third and final out of the inning.  After four innings, Northwest led the Rangers by a score 17-1.

In the top of the 5th, Northwest did not score any runs or earn any hits and left one runner on base.  McGlauflin struck-out swinging for the first out.  Pomatto then fouled-out to the first baseman for the second out.  Garber then walked.  Austin Wulf then pinch-hit for Fort.  Wulf then grounded-out to the third baseman for the third and final out of the inning.

In the bottom of the 5th, the Rangers did not score any runs, earned 2 hits, and left 2 runners on base.  Defensively for the Bearcats, Alex Singleton came in to play center field for Abernathy.  Austin Wulf stayed in the game to play left field.  Kole Klocko came in to relieve Fox on the mound.  The first Rangers batter grounded-out to the shortstop for the first out.  The second batter fouled out to right field for the second out.  The third batter then walked.  The fourth batter then doubled down the right field line to put runners on second and third with two outs.  The fifth batter then struck-out swinging for the third and final out.  After five innings of play, Northwest led Northwestern Oklahoma 17-1.

In the top of the 6th, Northwest did not score any runs, earn any hits, and did not leave a runner on base.  Hardegree struck-out swinging for the first out.  Ferreira flew-out to right field for the second out.  Huske then grounded-out to the first baseman for the third and final out.

In the bottom of the 6th, Northwestern Oklahoma did not score a run, earned 1 hit, and left 2 runners on base.  Blane Reutter came in to relieve Klocko.  The first Ranger batter singled to right field.  The second batter walked to put runners on first and second with no outs.  The third batter struck-out swinging for the first out.  The fourth batter fouled out to the catcher for the second out.  The fifth batter grounded out to the pitcher for the third and final out of the inning.

In the top of the 7th inning, Northwest did not score any runs, earned one hit, and left one runner on base.  Johnson grounded out to the shortstop for the first out.  Singleton flew-out to center field for the second out.  McGlauflin then singled to right field and then advanced to second base on a pass ball.  Pomatto then grounded-out to the shortstop for the third and final out of the inning.

In the bottom of the 7th inning, the Rangers scored 1 run off of 2 hits and left 2 runners on base.  Nikko Pablo came in the game to relieve Reutter.  The first batter walked.  The second batter reached on a fielder's choice after he grounded-out to the third base (throw to second to force out the first batter).  The third batter doubled to right-center field to advance the runner to third base.  With runners on second and third base and one out, the fourth batter popped-out to first base for the second out.  The fifth batter singled to third base to score a run.  The sixth batter then flew-out to center field for the third and final out of the game.

The Bearcats offensive leaders for game 1 were as follows:

Blake Hardegree made his Bearcat debut and started at catcher, no pass balls, went 2 for 3 with 5 RBIs, 2 walks, 1 run scored;
Eric McGlauflin went 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored;
Brandon Huske, went 2 for 4 with a RBI, a walk, and 3 runs scored.

In total, Northwest scored 17 runs off of 11 hits, 17 RBIs, 14 walks, 7 strike-outs, and left 12 runners on base.

The Bearcats pitchers did very well:

Ryker Fox earned the start and worked 4.0 innings, allowed 4 hits, 1 earned run, 2 walks, 6 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and 0 hit batsmen.
Kole Klocko earned the victory after one inning of work, allowed 1 hit, 1 walk, 1 strike-out, 0 earned runs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and 0 hit batsmen.
Blane Reutter worked 1.0 inning, allowed 1 hit, 0 runs, 1 walk, 1 strike-out, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and 0 hit batsmen.
Nikko Pablo worked 1.0 inning, allowed 2 hits, 1 earned run, 1 walk, 0 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and 0 hit batsmen.

Defensively, the Cats were not charged with an error.

Game 2 - Northwest lost 3-1 to see their 2014 record fall to 1-1.

In the top of the 1st, Northwest did not score any runs, earn any hits, and did not leave a runner on base.  Huske grounded out to the pitcher for the first out.  Johnson struck-out swinging for the second out.  Abernathy fouled out to the third baseman for the third out of the inning. 

In the bottom of the 1st, the Rangers scored 2 runs off of 3 hits and left 1 runner on base.  The first batter singled to right field.  The second batter was hit by a pitch.  The third batter struck-out looking for the first out.  The fourth batter reached on a fielder's choice after the second batter was forced out at second base for the second out.  The fifth batter singled to right field and scored the runner from third base.  The sixth batter singled up the middle and scored another runner right before a runner was gunned down trying to take third base.  After one inning, Northwestern Oklahoma leads NWMSU 2-0.

In the top of the 2nd, Northwest went 3-up/3-down and did not score any runs, hits, and did not leave a runner on base.  McGlauflin, Pomatto, and Garber all struck-out swinging.

In the bottom of the 2nd, NWOSU did not score any runs, earn any hits, and left 1 runner on base.  The first batter grounded out to first.  The second batter grounded out to the second baseman.  The third batter walked.  The fourth batter grounded out to the shortstop for the third and final out of the inning.  After 2 innings, NWOSU leads 2-0 over the Bearcats.

In the top of the 3rd, Northwest scored 1 run off of 2 hits, and left 2 runners on base.  Fort singled up the middle and advanced to second base on a pass ball.  Hardegree walked to put runners on first and second base.  Ferreira bunted single to load the bases without any outs.  Huske reached on a fielder's choice and scored Fort from third.  Paul Johnson reached on a fielder's choice.  Abernathy grounded out to shortstop for the third and final out.

In the bottom of the 3rd, NWOSU scored 1 run, 2 hits, and left 1 runner on base.  The first batter singled to the shortstop.  The second batter grounded out in a sacrifice 3B to 1B for the first out to advance the runner to second inning.  The third batter grounded out to shortstop for the second out.  The fourth batter singled to right field which scored the runner.  The fifth batter struck-out swinging for the third and final out.  After three innings, NWOSU leads 3-1.

In the top of the 4th, the Cats did not score a run, earned 1 hit, and left a 1 runner on base.  McGlauflin singled to right-center field.  Pomatto popped up to the shortstop.  Garber flied out to left field.  Fort flied out to left field.

In the bottom of the 4th, NWOSU did not score any runs, did not earn a hit, and left 1 runner on base.  The first batter grounded out to the pitcher.  The second batter struck-out looking for the second inning.  The third batter walked.  The fourth batter grounded out to the pitcher for the third and final out.  After four innings, NWOSU leads Northwest 3-1.

In the top of the 5th, Northwest went 3-up/3-down and did not score any runs, earn any hits, and did not leave a runner on base.  Hardegree struck-out looking.  Ferreira grounded to the second baseman.  Huske singled to left-center field and then advanced to second on a throwing error by the infield.  Johnson then singled to right field but Huske was thrown-out at home for the third and final out of the inning.

In the bottom of the 5th inning, NWOSU did not score any runs, hits, and left one runner on base.  Rob Henrichs came in the game to relieve Warren.  The first batter reached on a throwing error by Johnson.  The second batter struck-out swinging for the first inning.  The third batter grounded to shortstop.  The fourth batter grounded to shortstop for the third and final out.  After 5 innings, NWOSU leads 3-1.

In the top of the 6th inning, Northwest went 3-up/3-down and did not score any runs, hits, and did not leave a runner on base.  Abernathy grounded out to third, McGlauflin grounded out to the pitcher, and Pomatto grounded out to the shortstop.

In the bottom of the 6th inning, NWOSU scored 0 runs, 0 hits, and did not leave a runner on base.  Brian Schmiedt came in to relieve Henrichs.  The first batter struck-out swinging for the first out.  The second batter reached on an error by Huske.  The third batter hit into a double-play to end the inning.  After 6 innings, NWOSU leads 3-1.

In the top of the 7th inning, Northwest did not score any runs, hits, and did not leave any runners on base.  Garber grounded out to first.  Fort grounded to second baseman.  Hardegree grounded to third baseman for the third and final out.

Offensively, Northwest had 5 batters each earn one hit in the game (Huske, Johnson, McGlauflin, Fort, and Ferreira).  Hardegree earned a walk in the game.  In total, Northwest scored 1 run off of 5 hits, 1 RBI, 1 walk, and 5 strike-outs with 4 runners left on base.
