Opposition Research - Cameron University Aggies

Opposition Research - Cameron University Aggies

Northwest Missouri State will play a 4-game series at Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma, on Februar 14 & 15, 2014.  First pitch is set for 2pm on February 14th.
Series Record - First match-up between the two schools according to the 2013 Record Book.

About Cameron University - Following a 12 win season, Cameron didn't get a ton of love within the Lone Star Conference after getting picked tied for last with Eastern New Mexico.

On this year's roster the Aggies have an entire different make up with 14 new players and the addition of assistant coach Brady Huston to assist Holland on pitching. They are replacing last year's squad that finished in the bottom of the league in batting average and next to last in runs given up per game.

Adding Huston to the dugout this season will provide guidance to Aggies on the mound. After three seasons at Seminole State as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator Huston's throwers went 120-49 and he had 11 players drafted by the Major League Baseball League.

The Aggies opened their season at East Central with a double-header on Saturday at noon and Sunday at 1 pm. Cameron then headed back to Lawton for their home opener on Tuesday, February 4 at 2 pm with a single nine inning game against Southwestern Oklahoma.

Head Coach - Todd Holland.  Holland is starting his second decade as head coach of the Cameron baseball team. Holland's overall record as head coach at Cameron is 282-221.

Holland was selected to succeed longtime Aggie head coach Ron Ihler in the summer of 2003 after spending the previous season as Ihler's assistant coach. He served the 2004 season as interim head coach and was officially named the head coach of the Cameron baseball team following a 2004 season which produced the Aggies' first winning season in more than a decade.

Holland followed that successful debut with another winning season in 2005, earning Co-Lone Star Conference North Division Coach of the Year honors in the process.

Holland rejoined the Aggie program in 2003 after spending time in uniform as a player and assistant at Cameron from 1997-99. A career .400 hitter in two seasons with the Aggies, Holland currently owns Cameron single-season school records for total hits (80) and doubles (25). As a senior with the Aggies in 1998, he hit .428 and had a slugging percentage of .743, earning second team All-South Region and first team All-Lone Star Conference honors.

In his first season as the Aggies' head coach in 2004, Holland guided Cameron to its first winning season in more than a decade, finishing with a 26-19 record while competing in the extremely competitive Lone Star Conference North Division. Five Cameron players earned all-conference honors that season, including first team All-LSC North selections Steve Clark and Allen Mitchell.

2014 Season for Cameron - The Cameron University baseball team started out the 2014 season on a two game winning streak, sweeping the double header against East Central Oklahoma in Ada.

Some of the Cameron Aggies got their first collegiate hit and RBI in the double-header. The pitchers did a phenomenal job, starters Tobin Mateychick and Drew Reidt really threw well and gave the Aggies a chance to win.  Josh Neilson earned his first save of the year. Offensively, Brad Blumer, Garrett Schaede, Jordan Climpson, and Kas Sanders all had a good double-header.

Cameron 2, East Central Oklahoma 1

Cameron got seven strong innings from Mateychick, a transfer from Wichita State, who then turned it over to Neilson in the seventh to close out the game. Mateychick gave up three hits, one earned run, struck out four, and walked three in his first six innings as an Aggie.

Cameron got on the board first in the top of the second inning. After doubling to right, senior Blumer scored on a single up the middle from freshman DH Cody Knight for the Aggies first run of the season.

After three scoreless innings, CU extended the lead in the top of the sixth on a Climpson RBI single to left, scoring Sanders, who was hit by a pitch to begin the inning.

The Aggies threatened to put more runs on the board in the top of the seventh, but after getting runners on second and third with one out, CU was stalled out by Kaplan who got a popout and a strikeout to end the inning. Neilson came into the game in the bottom of the seventh to close it out, and got two quick outs on a groundout and strikeout. After giving up a pinch hit single to ECU's Ethan Gold, Neilson got Ty Huie to pop out to end the game.

Cameron 7, East Central 1

The Aggie offense sparked for seven runs in game two, and were powered by another solid start from their starting pitcher. Reidt got the start in game two, and went six innings, gave up seven hits, one earned run, one walk, and struck out four, with Daspin coming in and pitching the seventh.

Cameron didn't take long to get on the board, scoring their first run in the top of the first, via a RBI from Mateychick, who hit into a fielder's choice to score Codey McElroy.

The Aggies got three more in the top of the third, the first on and RBI single from Climpson, which scored Sanders. Schaede tripled in two more in the next at bat, scoring Blumer and Climpson to make it 4-0.

After getting another run in the fourth, on a passed ball that scored Tyler Palmer, the Aggies extended the lead to seven in the top of the fifth. The first was on an error that scored Mateychick, and the second on another passed ball that scored Schaede, who reached on the error earlier.

On the day, Blumer was 3-7 with three runs scored, while Sanders went 2-6 with two runs scored. Both Climpson and Schaede were 2-7 with two RBI a piece, and Knight was 1-3 with an RBI.

The two teams were scheduled to play a third game the following day, but due to expected inclement weather, the game was not played.
The Aggies was scheduled to play their home opener against Southwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday, February 4 was cancelled due to weather.  CU will play on the road the weekend of February 7-8 at the University of Texas-Permian Basin in Odessa, Texas.

UTPB beats CU 5-3

The Aggie baseball team went down south to face Texas-Permian Basin this afternoon, and came away empty handed, losing both games of the double header and are now 2-2 on the season.

In game one of the double header, Cameron got on the board first via a Jordan Climpson RBI single in the top of the first, but UTPB tied it up in the bottom of the frame. Cameron put two more on the board in the second, after back to back RBI singles from Kas Sanders and Brad Blumer. The Falcons took the lead from CU, thanks to Jose Sierra, who hit a three run homer in the third and then drove in another in the fifth. They would win the game 5-3.

UTPB beats CU 4-3

Just like in game one, the Aggies took the lead early as Tobin Mateychick drove in two with a double. The Falcons got one back in the second, and tied the game in the third, before Sierra drove in another run to take the lead. Mateychick collected his third RBI of the game on a single that drove in Climpson in the fifth to tie it at 3-3. In the bottom of the sixth, the Falcons got the eventual winning run on a RBI single from Ty Morgan, which would earn them the 4-3 win.

Mateychick went three innings in game one, giving up four earned runs on two hits, with four punch outs and four walks and is now 1-1 for the year. Also 1-1 now, Drew Reidt was the loser in game two, going five and two thirds innings with seven hits, two earned runs, a walk, and a strikeout.

On offense, Blumer was 4-7 with an RBI and a run scored, while Mateychick was 2-3 with three RBI.

For the Falcons (3-3), Sierra was 5-5 with five RBI and a run scored, while Brad Paramapoonya earned two saves, pitching the seventh of both games, giving up one hit, no runs, and striking out three.

The Cameron University baseball team will return home with a .500 record after splitting their final two games at UT-Permian Basin on Sunday.

UTPB defeated CU 6-2

After getting swept on Saturday the Aggies fell 6-2 in game one but recovered to take game two 5-3.

Cameron jumped out ahead by two in the top of third the first game after CU strung together four straight hits with one out.   The Aggies lead would be short-lived through after UTPB plated a run in fourth and tacked on three additional runs in the fifth scoring a run off on an illegal pitch and a two RBI double to put the Falcons ahead 4-2.

UTPB added two more insurance runs in the sixth off of a one out double.
Tobin Mateychick went 2 for 4 with a run scored; Jordan Climpson and Brad Blumer both had a hit and a RBI.  Brian Schwabe started the game for CU going 4 1/3 innings, striking out seven, and giving up two unearned runs in the no-decision; Brent Hendy (0-1) was charged with the loss recording one out, while giving up two runs.

CU defeated UTPB 3-2

In the nightcap, the Aggies went ahead in the first inning and led the entire game for their third win of the season 5-3 over UTPB.

CU collected a run off of UTPB error in the first and Mateychick got a RBI double in the second to put the Ags up 2-0.  Brandon Raidy added to the lead in the fourth raking in a hit through the right side to score Kas Sanders in from third to make it a 3-0 ballgame.

In the top of the seventh Cameron got a pair of insurance runs off a Sanders RBI single and a Tyler Palmer two out RBI single to give them a 5-0 lead.

UTPB did go down swinging in bottom of the seventh getting a pair of runs with the bases loaded but Cameron's lead would be too much to overcome from in the final inning.

Cameron had five players with a RBI with Sanders and Palmer collecting a pair of hits.  Steve Matta (1-0) started the game and went 6 1/3 innings in the win; he would allow only one earned run and four hit
