This week in Bearcat Baseball - Landon Figg, Luke Hassman, Holler, Pitching Staff with exemplary 2017 debuts


Maryville, Mo. - In this week of Bearcat baseball, the B2R highlights the exemplary debuts of newcomers Landon Figg and Luke Hassman, veteran James Holler, and the Bearcat pitching staff after Northwest's 6-1 road trip to open the 2017 NCAA regular season. Northwest won its first 6 games of the season which matched its best start to a single season since the 1973 team. While all phases of the game has shined for Northwest so far this season, the Bearcat pitching staff has dominated the opponents with a team ERA of 2.28.

First, the B2R highlights 2 newcomers who have each made a tremendous splash on the Bearcat baseball team.

Landon Figg stands 6'1" and weighs 200 pounds. He is a Junior from Higginsville, Missouri, and transferred to Northwest from North Central Community College in Trenton, Missouri. Through seven games of the 2017 NCAA Division 2 season, Landon is leading Northwest Missouri State with a .462 batting average and has started all 7 games at third base. Landon is slugging .615 % and has an on-base percentage of .571. Landon has scored 8 runs off of 12 hits, 4 doubles, 7 RBIs, 7 walks, 1 hit by pitch, 4 strike-outs, and 1 sacrifice.  He has only committed 1 error while playing the hot corner for the Bearcats.



Luke Hassman stands 6'5" and weighs 250 pounds. He is a Junior from Altoona, Iowa, and transferred to Northwest from Kirkwood Community College. Through seven games of the 2017 NCAA Division 2 season, Luke is second on the team in batting with a .412 average. Luke has a .471 slugging % and a .474 on-base %. Luke has scored 3 runs off of 7 hits, 1 double, 4 RBIs, 2 walks, 4 strike-outs, and has not committed an error.





Second, the B2R highlights Senior first baseman, James Holler.

Senior first baseman James Holler stands 6'3" and weighs 210 pounds. The 2016 MIAA All-Academic honor roll student-athlete comes from St. Robert, Missouri. Holler graduated high school from Waynesville, Missouri. James has started every game at first base for Northwest in 2017. He is third on the team in hitting with a .364 batting average. James is slugging .394 % with a .447 on-base %. James has scored 8 runs off of 12 hits, 1 double, 7 RBIs, 3 walks, hit by a pitch twice, and 7 strike-outs. James has only committed 2 errors.




Third, the B2R highlights the Bearcat pitching staff.

This is how terrific the Bearcat pitching staff has been through the first seven games of the season:

The B2R will first discuss the pitcher with a sub-1.00 ERA;
The B2R will then discuss the pitchers (3) with a sub-2.00 ERA;
The B2R will then discuss the pitchers (3) with a sub-3.00 ERA; and
The B2R will then discuss the pitchers (2) with a sub-4.00 ERA.

Of the 2 Bearcat pitchers that do not fall into one of these categories, both made their Bearcat debut in varsity NCAA Division 2 competition. As an entire staff, Northwest's team ERA is 2.28, 6-1 record, 1 complete game, 29 walks, and 59 strike-outs.

The B2R now focuses on the Bearcat pitcher with a sub-1.00 ERA, Nikko Pablo.

Nikko Pablo has stole the show to start the 2017 NCAA Division 2 baseball season. The Senior pitcher from Stockton, California, stands 5'7" and weighs 145 pounds. Nikko leads the team with his 0.77 ERA in 4 appearances. Nikko's 2017 record stands at 1-0 and he has also earned 2 saves. Nikko has worked 11.2 innings but none are more memorable at this juncture than his 8.1 innings of masterful scoreless relief to beat Henderson State on Friday, February 10th. The 2016 All-MIAA third team member has allowed 7 hits, 1 run, 3 walks, and 8 strike-outs so far this season.



The B2R will next highlight the pitchers with a sub-2.00 ERA, Anthony Caenepeel, Eddy Kraeber, and Austin Battaglia.

Anthony Caenepeel is a Senior pitcher from Willard, Missouri. The 2016 All-MIAA third team member stands 6'00" tall and weighs 190 pounds. Anthony leads the team with a 2-0 record after winning both of his starts this season. He is 2nd on the team with a 1.35 ERA. Anthony has worked 13.1 innings, allowed 5 hits, 2 runs, 5 walks, and struck-out 17 batters.






Eddy Kraeber is a Junior from Prole, Iowa. He stands 6'2" and weighs 195 pounds. Eddy is third on the team with a 1.93 ERA. He has worked 4.2 innings, allowed 6 hits, 1 run, 0 walks, and struck-out 2 batters.








Austin Battaglia is a Senior from Waukee, Iowa. He stands 6'00" and weighs 190 pounds. Austin is 1-0 with 4 appearances so far this season. He is third on the team with a 1.93 ERA. Austin has worked 4.2 innings, 3 hits, 1 earned run, 3 walks, and struck-out 4 batters.







The B2R now highlights the pitchers with a sub-3.00 ERA, Joseph Hietpas, Jacob Wagner, Quinten VanAckeren.

Joseph Hietpas is a Junior from Fairfield, Iowa. The 2016 MIAA Academic Excellence Award Recepient stands 6'2" and weights 190 pounds. Joseph has a 2.25 ERA and a 1-0 record with 1 complete game. Joseph has worked 12.0 innings, allowed 6 hits, 3 earned runs, 7 walks, and struck-out 16 batters.







Jacob Wagner is a Junior from Buena Park, California. He stands 6'2" and weighs 170 pounds. Jacob has a 2.45 ERA after 5 appearances so far in 2017. He has pitched 3.2 innings, allowed 3 hits, 1 run, 0 walks, and struck-out 5 batters.







Quinten VanAckeren is a Freshman from Omaha, Nebraska. He stands 6'3" and weighs 190 pounds. Quinten has a 2.70 ERA after 1 appearance in 2017. He has pitched 3.1 innings, allowed 3 hits, 1 run, 0 walks, and struck-out 2 batters.








The B2R now highlights the Bearcat pitchers with a sub-4.00 ERA, Brad Roberts and Jimmy McElwain.

Brad Roberts is a Junior from Cairo, Missouri. The 2016 MIAA Academic honor roll member stands 6'3" and weighs 195 pounds. Brad has a 3.48 ERA and a 0-1 record after this week in Bearcat baseball. Brad made 2 starts this week. He has worked 10.1 innings, allowed 9 hits, 4 earned runs, 6 walks, and struck-out 4 batters.






Jimmy McElwain is a 6'00" Junior from Springfield, Nebraska, and weighs 190 pounds. The 2016 MIAA honor roll recepient has a 3.86 ERA after 3 appearance this week. In total, Jimmy has pitched 2.1 innings, allowed 1 hit, 1 run, 2 walks, and struck-out 1 batter.







Next for your Bearcat baseball team - Northwest travels to Edmond, Oklahoma, to play a weekend series against Oklahoma Christian University. Game 1 is on Friday, February 17, 2017, at 1pm. Game 2 is Saturday, February 18, 2017, at 1pm. Game 3 is Sunday, February 19, 2017, at 1pm.
