Series re-cap - Missouri Southern

The B2R is happy to report that it had a chance to finally attend live NCAA baseball action in 2013 (only half-way through the season).  It was a beautiful weekend in Maryville with 60 degree weather and the Bearcats wearing the home white uniforms.  There is nothing better than Bearcats, baseball, home white uniforms, and a sunny day.  Northwest played well in both Saturday games despite losing both.  Game 1 was a tug-of-war between two exemplary pitching performances by each team's starters.  The B2R was very impressed with Ryker Fox and Nathanial Horton.  Tyler Barth provided a crucial hold to close out the 6th and start the 7th innings.  A bang-bang play at the plate where Northwest's runner was tagged out at home after a terrific throw from the Southern right fielder preserved Southern's chances of winning the game in the bottom of the 7th inning.  In game 2, the hard-luck Bearcats lost a heart breaker in the final inning of the game.  Marcus Garrett was lights out in the game.  The best the B2R has seen him pitch.  Marcus held Southern to 1 hit through 6 innings.  Some tough luck errors in the final frame resulted in 4 runs scored, 3 of which were unearned.  In game 3, Southern got out to an early lead and added to it.  The Bearcats could not match the Southern track meet offense.  As a result, the Bearcats are swept at home.  From what the B2R saw, I'm proud of how the 'Cats played in the game.  The breaks were against the 'Cats on Saturday but the fact remains is that the team has put both Western (a top 20 team) and Southern (plus .500 conference record) on the ropes in 3 of the last 4 games.  The Cats have a huge week ahead as they battle for a post-season conference tournament spot in 2013.
