Game Recap - Rockhurst

Opening Remarks - Inconsistency reared its ugly head as our Bearcats lost to Rockhurst university today 3-4 in a walk-off fashion as Rockhurst plated 1 run in the Bottom of the 9th inning.  Despite terrific starting pitching from Sean Brady (worked 5.0 innings of shut-out baseball), the bullpen faltered with command problems.  Its hard to get too fired-up at the bullpen when they keep another team to 4 runs or less in college baseball and metal bats, but the fact remains that Rockhurst scored runs in the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings to win the game.  Offense doesn't get a pass either because despite getting 11 hits, the Cats only scored 3 runs, none of which came in the 7th, 8th, or 9th innings.  Factor in the Cats did not earn a walk yet struck-out 11 times in the game, and the runners were not advanced in many situations.  Personally, I don't know if I'm a fan of Pomatto going in to pitch relief, only because I'm more worried about losing his bat and arm in right field to injury.  Bottom line though is clearly the coach is looking for someone that can throw a quality strike consistently in a high pressure situation late in the game.  Considering how well Sean did Tuesday, I'd like to see the Brady Bunch (Pat and Sean) pull Game 4 versus Truman.  You know what though, get me 9 innings of shut-out baseball and I don't care who gets the mound.  Anyway, on to the game:

Northwest received terrific starting pitching from Sean Brady, who worked 5.0 innings, allowed 3 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, and struck-out 5.  Jacob Raffaele came in relief of Sean and worked 1.0 inning, allowed 3 hits, 1 run (earned) and faced 6 batters.  Nathaniel Horton relieved Jacob but had a tough outing as he lasted only 0.2 innings, allowed 2 hits, 1 run (earned), 1 strike-out, 0 walks, and faced 3 batters.  Nick Caldrone then got the call and worked 0.2 innings, allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk, 1 strike-out, and 1 wild pitch.  Jon Pomatto made his pitching debut and lasted 0.2 innings, allowed 2 hits, 1 run (earned), and faced 4 batters.  Josh Parrish picked-up the loss and saw his season record fall to 0-2.  He worked 1.0 innings, allowed 2 hits, 1 run (earned), 0 walks, 2 strike-outs, 1 balk, and faced 5 batters.

Defensively, the Bearcats committed 1 error in the game.
Ryan Abernathy - #6

Tyler Durant - #16

Jake Kretzer - #7

Offensively, the 3 stars of the game included Ryan Abernathy (2 for 5 including a triple, 1 RBI, and 1 run scored), Tyler Durant (2 for 4 with a double, and 1 RBI), and Jake Kretzer (2 for 4).  Bedard, Swain, Travis Green, Garber, and Pomatto all earned a hit in the game each respectively.  Swain also had a stolen base in the game.  In total, Northwest scored 3 runs, earned 11 hits, 3 RBIs, 0 walks, and 11 strike-outs.

Go Cats!!
