In Game 1, Northwest lost to UAM by a score of 19-7 to fall to 0-1 on the year.

Offensively, the Bearcats were led by Ryan Abernathy with his 4 for 5 performance at the plate, 2 of the 4 hits were doubles, 1 run scored.  In addition, Brandon Huske made his Bearcat debut and performed extremely well.  Offensively, Huske went 1 for 4 with 3 RBIs, 1 walk, and was caught stealing.  JJ Baccari provided a clutch bat off the bench and stayed in the game to play catcher.  JJ finished the game at the plate with a 1 for 2, 3 RBIs, 1 run scored, 1 home run.  Another special note, Matt Kanger made his Bearcat debut in the game in a pinch hitting roll, went 0 for 0 officially (got hit by a pitch) and scored one run.  In total, Northwest earned 10 hits out of 33 at bats, scored 7 runs, 7 RBIs, 2 walks, 6 strike-outs, and left 5 runners on base.

Defensively, Northwest committed 3 errors with Cameron Bedard charged with one and Luke Lawyer charged with 2.  Northwest did not execute a double-play in the game.

Pitching, Northwest had a tough day.  Blane Reutter made his Bearcat debut and was the Game 1 starter.  That is a tribute to his hard work and determination to get the nod from the coaches especially in his first season at Northwest.  Blane had a tough day and worked 0.2 innings, allowed 4 hits, 8 runs (7 earned), 4 walks, 0 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, hit 0 batters, and threw 37 pitches.  Austin Warren came in to relieve Blane and also made his Bearcat debut.  Austin worked 2.2 innings, allowed 7 hits, 7 runs (all earned), 2 walks, 0 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, hit 0 batters, and threw 47 pitches.  Patrick Brady game in to relieve Warren and threw 2.1 innings, allowed 6 hits, 4 runs (all earned), 0 walks, 2 strike-outs, 1 wild pitch, 0 balks, hit 0 batters, and threw 44 pitches.  Jace Anderson was the 4th Bearcat pitcher of the game and threw 1.1 innings, allowed 1 hit, 0 runs, 1 walk, 4 strike-outs, 1 wild pitch, 0 balks, hit 1 batter, and threw 30 pitches.  Finally, Tyler Barth was the 5th and final Bearcat pitcher of the game and threw 1.0 innings, allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 1 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, hit 1 batter, and threw 17 pitches.

In Game 2, Northwest lost 8-7 to fall to 0-2 on the year.

Offensively, Northwest was led by newcomer Brandon Huske (2B), who went 2 for 5 with 1 RBI, 1 run scored and a stolen base.  Eric Swain (SS) went 2 for 5 (1 double) with 1 run scored.  Eric McGlauflin (DH) went 2 for 3 (1 double)(1 HBP)(1 stolen base) with 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored, 1 walk.  JJ Baccari (C) went 2 for 3 with a run scored.  Also, Luke Lawyer (PH/C) went 1 for 2 (a double) with a RBI, Charlie Krueger (LF) went 1 for 5 with 1 RBI, 1 run scored, and Ryan Abernathy (CF) went 1 for 4 with a run scored and a stolen base.  In total, Northwest scored 7 runs off of 11 hits from 5 RBIs, 4 walks, 4 strike-outs, and left 8 runners on base.

Defensively, the Cats were not charged with an error and executed 1 double-play.

Pitching, Marcus Garrett earned the start and worked 5.0 innings, allowed 9 hits, 6 runs (4 earned according to the box score), 4 walks, 4 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, hit 0 batters.  Marcus had a tough start with 1 run scoring in the UAM 1st inning, and 5 runs scoring in the UAM 2nd inning, but then Marcus settled in very well and did not allow any runs for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings.  Chase Anderson came in the 6th inning and did not allow any runs.  Chase worked the 7th inning without allowing any runs.  He worked 2/3's an inning in the 8th inning and was charged with the run (game-tieing run).  In total, Chase worked 2.2 innings, allowed 0 hits, 1 earned run, 1 walk, 2 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and hit 1 batter.  Carson Smith came in the 8th inning to relieve Chase Anderson.  Carson worked the 9th inning, too.  UAM scored the game winning run in the bottom of the 9th.  In total, Carson worked 0.2 innings, allowed 3 hits, 1 earned run, 1 walk, 0 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and hit 0 batters.

In Game 3, Northwest lost to UAM 11-1 in 8 innings to fall to 0-3 on the year.

Offensively, Northwest could not figure out the UAM pitching duo of Marshall and Smith and managed only 2 hits, 1 run scored, 0 RBIs, 6 walks, 6 strike-outs, and left 7 runners on base.  Ryan Abernathy (CF) went 1 for 3 with 1 walk and a stolen base.  Charlie Krueger (LF) went 1 for 4 (a double).  Brandon Huske went 0 for 1 but earned 3 walks in the game.  Jon Pomatto was twice hit by a pitch and stole a base in the game.

Defensively, Northwest was not charged with an error and executed 1 double-play.

Pitching, Ryker Fox made his Bearcat debut and worked 4.0 innings, allowed 6 hits, 4 runs (all earned), 2 walks, 2 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and hit 0 batters.  Ryker got off to a tough start and allowed 4 runs in the 1st inning, but like Marcus Garrett, settled in nicely to not allow any runs in the 2nd inning, 3rd inning, and 4th inning.  Dalton Perry made his Bearcat debut and came in to pitch in relief of Ryker in the 5th inning.  Dalton worked 1.0 inning, allowed 3 hits, 3 runs (2 earned according to the box score), 2 walks, 0 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and hit 2 batters.  Nathanial Horton came in the 6th inning to relieve Dalton and worked 2.1 innings, allowed 1 hit, 2 runs (both earned), 2 walks, 4 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and hit 0 batters.  Hort did not allow a run in the 6th or 7th inning.  Hort ran into trouble in the 8th inning were the runs were allowed.  Bex Trout made his Bearcat debut and came in to relieve Horton in the 8th inning.  Bex had a tough outing and did not record an out.  In total, Trout worked 0.0 innings, allowed 2 hits, 2 runs (both earned), 1 walk, 0 strike-outs, 0 wild pitch, 0 balk, hit 1 batter, and faced 4 batters in the inning.  The last pitcher for Northwest in the game was Tyler Barth who worked 0.1 innings, allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 0 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and hit 0 batters.

B2R Analysis - In all 3 phases (hitting, pitching, and defense), the Bearcats had a tough start to the 2013 season.  The silver-lining of this cloudy start though is Ryan Abernathy is off to a white-hot start and is batting .500 in 3 games, scored 2 runs, 2 doubles, slugging .667%, 1 walk, on-base percentage .538%, stolen 2 bases in 2 attempts, and not committed an error.  In addition, Brandon Huske has hit the NCAA Division 2 baseball circuit running (all-conference?) and batting .300, scored 1 run, 4 RBIs, slugging .300%, 4 walks, 1 strike-out, on-base percentage of .500%, stolen 1 base in 2 attempts and not committed 1 error.  Eric McGlauflin is batting .300, 2 runs scored, 1 double, 2 RBIs, slugging .400%, 1 walk, twice hit by a pitch, on-base percentage .462%, and stolen 1 base in 1 attempt.  Luke Lawyer is batting .333, 1 run scored, 1 double, 1 RBI, slugging .500%, on-base .333%.

What I notice looking at the statistics is the Bearcats appear to be getting their "sea legs" where players have a tough start but settle in and perform to their talent level thereafter.  Pitchers had a tough first inning, but would settle in throw 0s on the board.  Of the bottom 4 offensive statistical leaders, Krueger, Swain, Bedard, and Garber, everybody knows those 4 will play at an All-Conference caliber and get their numbers.  Add in the perfect fielding of new 2B Brandon Huske, plus his .300 batting average and .500 on-base percentage, Northwest's infield defense is markedly better than in 2012.  Despite committing 3 errors in Game 1, the Bearcats did not commit another error the rest of the series.  Northwest is fielding .971% which is 20 points higher than 2012 level.  Better defense = less runs.  Pitching will improve.  The guys will make adjustments, not issue as many walks, stay out of hitter counts, and execute.  A lot of guys made their Bearcat debut, also meaning they made their NCAA Division 2 baseball debut.  I don't know if I would be able to feel my legs if I was going to the mound for the first time against a legit college baseball team.  This is an exciting team and great things are ahead for the Bearcats in 2013.

Go Cats!!
