Caenepeel, Bearcats, soar over FHSU Lions to win Game 1 of the year.

Alva, OK - Northwest defeated Fort Hays State 4-2 to start its 2017 campaign. Northwest used solid defense, timely hitting, and ANTHONY CAENEPEEL'S exemplary pitching to win the day. In addition to Caenepeel's performance, JACOB WAGNER came in with a clutch relief performance to get the Bearcats out of trouble in the 7th inning. Despite playing a MIAA foe, the game does not count as a league game or towards the league standings.

The stories of the game:

Anthony Caenepeel's MIAA pitcher of the week caliber performance with over 6 innings pitched and 12 strike-outs with only 1 earned run;

Jacob Wagner's huge and clutch performance to get the Bearcats out of a runner on 2nd with 1 out jam without allowing a run;

FHSU's miscues allowing for 2 unearned runs; and

Northwest's bullpen worked 2.2 innings and allowed only 1 run, 0 walks, and 2 strike-outs.

Congratulations to Logan Rycraft, Landon Figg, and Alix Herrera who made their Bearcat debuts on Friday, February 3, 2017.

Logan Rycraft earned a walk on the day and started at short stop;
Landon Figg hit 1 for 2 with 1 RBI, 1 run scored, and 2 walks in his start at third base;
Alix Herrera started at catcher.

Key Innings of the game - In the bottom of the 1st inning, Northwest got on the board after Garrett Fort crushed a double to lead-off the inning. Then, with 2 outs, James Holler singled to center field to score the run so Northwest took the lead 1-0.

FHSU would tie the game in the top of the second inning.

In the bottom of the 4th inning, Northwest would re-take the lead 2-1 after Handzlik crushed a single to left field. Handzlik would all the way home to score after an error by the FHSU left fielder.

The score would remain 2-1 until the bottom of the 8th inning when Kevin Handzlik, the Omaha spark plug, singled to center field, then stole second base, then Landon Figg walked to put runners on first and second base. With two outs, and runners on first and second base, Logan Rycraft would reach base on an error by the FHSU short stop and caused Figg and Handzlik to score to make the score at 4-1.

In the top of the 9th inning, FHSU would tack on a solo home run to reach the final score, 4-2.

Offensively, Kevin Handzlik was your most valuable player against Fort Hays State. In total, Handzlik went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored, 1 walk, and 1 stolen base. Landon Figg had an exemplary debut as a Northwest Missouri State University Bearcat and went 1 for 2 at the plate with 1 RBI, 1 run scored, and 2 walks. Garrett Fort with 1 for 4 (a double) on the day. Ozzie Adams went 1 for 4 at the plate. James Holler went 1 for 4 with 1 RBI in the game. Jay Hrdlicka went 1 for 3 (a double) on the day. Logan Rycraft picked-up a walk and earned a start at short stop. In total, Northwest scored 4 runs off of 7 hits, 2 RBIs, 4 walks, 5 strike-outs, and left 8 runners on base.

Defensively, Northwest committed one error in the game.

Pitching, Anthony Caenepeel earned the start in the game and had an exemplary performance. In total, AC worked 6.1 innings, allowed only 2 hits, 1 earned run, 3 walks, 12 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and did not hit a batter. AC quite simply flashed a MIAA Pitcher of the Year performance in the game. The game was 1-1 heading into the bottom of the 2nd inning. AC would not allow another run in his outing. Northwest would take the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the 4th inning where it remained until he was pulled for Jacob Wagner. Jacob Wagner came into the game in the top of the 7th inning. AC got the first FHSU batter to ground out to the second baseman. The second FHSU then doubled to left center field. Coach Loe relieved AC with Jacob Wagner and my-oh-my what a clutch performance by the lanky side-winder. Wagner worked the Bearcats out of a jam by having the third FHSU batter ground-out to third base for the second out and the fourth FHSU batter fly-out to center field to end the inning. Clutch. Huge. I can't be more proud of AC and Wagner for getting the Bearcats the lead and late into the game. In the 8th inning, Austin Battaglia came into the game and worked 1.0 inning, allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 1 strike-out, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter. Battaglia got the first FHSU batter of the inning to strike-out swinging. The next FHSU batter grounded out to second base. The third FHSU batter grounded out to third base to end the inning. In the 9th inning, Nikko Pablo came into the game to close out the victory for Northwest. Nikko worked 1.0 inning, allowed 1 hit, 1 earned run, 0 walks, 1 strike-out, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter.

Go Cats!!
