Opening remarks on Central series: The Cats were swept by the Mules but had opportunities to win the final two games of the series with the game winning run on 1st base in Game 3 and the game winning run at bat in Game 4. The difference between Games 1 & 2 from Games 3 $ 4 seemed to be defensive execution (7 errors in Games 1 & 2, 2 errors in Games 3 & 4). If the Cats take away anything from this series is that they were ascending as the series went along. Now the B2R is never one to boast, but clearly the spike in performance execution is due to the Slobby Bobby Phat Brisket-n-Burnt ends sandwiches the guys had between games 2 and 3. I'll take 10 seconds and actually believe it, but read below as the numbers never lie.
In Game 1 versus Central, the Bearcats lost 0-5 and saw their record fall to 5-12 on the year in front of an announced crowd of 102 fans in sunny and warm weather. The Game took 2:27 to complete. With the win, Central's record became an astonishing 13-1. Team Ace Chris Green took the mound against the Top 5 Mules and had a gritty performance despite seeing his season record fall to 2-2 on the 2012 season. In total, Chris pitched 5.1 innings, allowed 6 hits, 4 runs (all earned), 5 walks, 2 strike-outs, and hit 1 batter. Jacob Raffaele came in for another superior relief performance and worked 1.1 innings, allowed 1 hit, 0 runs, 2 walks, 1 strike-out, and 1 wild pitch. Nathaniel Horton had a terrific outing and worked 2.1 innings, allowed 0 hits, 1 unearned run, 3 of the 7 outs were fly-outs and 4 of the 7 were ground outs.
Defensively, the 'Cats may have been a little amped facing a top 5 team because they committed an unseasonable 4 errors in the game. Give credit to the defense here though, 2 of the 4 errors were committed by pitchers.
Offensively, the Bearcats only managed 4 hits, 0 runs, 3 walks, and 12 strike-outs in the game. The 'Cats left 5 runners on base. Swainey, E, Steve-O, and Kretz (sorry, I can't call him Jakey despite the popular nick name amongst the team) all had 1 hit in the game. Add in E & Steve-O both earned 1 walk, too. Jon (You say Pomayto, I say Pomatto) also earned a walk in the game.
In Game 2, Northwest's record fell to 5-13, 4-6 MIAA, after the Cats lost 1-8 in front of 111 fans in a game that lasted 1:46 to complete in windy conditions. Jace Anderson had a tough outing and picked-up the loss in the game. His record fell to 0-3 on the year. In total, Jace worked 2.2 innings, allowed 6 hits, 8 runs (only 4 earned), 1 walk, 2 strike-outs, and hit 1 batter. Pat Brady came in relief and had a terrific outing. Pat worked 2.1 innings, allowed 1 hit, 0 runs, 2 walks, and 3 strike-outs. Marcus Garrett had a stellar relief appearance and worked 2.0 innings, allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, and struck-out 1.
Defensively, the Bearcats had another tough outing and were charged with 3 errors in the game.
Offensively, Jake Kretzer went 1 for 2 with a double, was hit by a pitch, and earned 1 RBI. Ryno went 1 for 3 with a walk and a stolen base. Swainey, Magic (Tyler Durant), and Travis Green all had a hit in the game. Add in Camo and Travis both earned a walk, too.
In Game 3, Northwest lost 1-3 to see their record fall to 5-14, 4-7 MIAA in a terrific ballgame. The bottom line is the defense played superior baseball and only committed 1 error in the game. The Bearcats had the game winning run on 1st base in the final frame and out. Chase Anderson started the game and picked-up the loss as his season record fell to 2-3. Chaser worked 6.0 innings, allowed 9 hits, 3 runs (all earned), 2 walks, 1 strike-out, and 1 wild pitch. Josh Parrish came in to close out the game and worked 1.0 innings, allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, and had 1 intentional walk.
Offensively, Magic (Tyler Durant) went 2 for 4 with 1 triple and a run scored. Ryno also went 2 for 4 with a stolen base. Swainey went 1 for 3 with a stolen base and a walk. E went 1 for 3 with a double. Steve-O went 1 for 1 with a walk and a RBI.
In Game 4, the Cats lost 6-8 in another game where the game winning run was at bat. Again, another solid defensive effort as the Cats only committed 1 error in the game. Carson Smith earned the start and picked-up the loss as his season record fell to 0-2. Carson worked 3.2 innings, allowed 7 hits, 5 runs (4 earned), 3 walks, 1 strike-out, and hit 1 batter. Nick Caldrone had a tough outing and did not record an out in the game. Nick allowed 2 hits, 3 earned runs, 1 walk, and hit 1 batter. Jacob Raffaele came in relief of Nick and worked 0.2 innings, allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, and walked 1 batter. Pat Brady came in relief of Jacob and worked 1.1 innings, allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, and walked 3 batters. Nathaniel Horton then came in to pitch and worked 0.2 innings, allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, and 1 walk. Josh Parrish had another stellar outing and worked 2.2 innings, allowed 0 runs, 0 hits, and struck-out 3 batters.
Offensively, Ryno went 3 for 5 (including a double) with 2 runs scored and a stolen base. E went 2 for 2 (including a double) with 1 RBI, 1 run scored. Swainey went 2 for 4 (home run), with 3 RBIs and 1 run scored. Kretz went 2 for 3 with 2 walks and a stolen base. Cole Mapes went 2 for 5 in the game. Steve-O went 1 for 2 with a RBI. In total, the Bearcats scored 6 runs off of 12 hits, 5 walks, and 10 strike-outs.
Opening Remarks about MoSo - Northwest played much better defensive baseball against the Lions and split the 4-game series. If you take out a stinging loss in Game 2 where the Lions came back to score the go-ahead runs in the last inning, the Bearcats played much more complete games this series then against Central. In the Central series, the Bearcats committed 9 errors but improved drastically against MoSo and only committed 1 error in this series. Even though the Northwest pitching wasn't as hoped for, the improved defense sparked some better offense and gave the Cats the lead in 3 of 4 games. I'll take that every series from here on out. Southern was a disciplined team. This was a good series for the Bearcats.
In Game 1 versus Missouri Southern, Northwest won 8-6 and saw its record advance to 6-15, 5-8 MIAA. Chris Green started Game 1 and had a tough outing, only lasting 3.1 innings, allowed 7 hits, 4 runs (all earned), 3 walks, and 3 strike outs. Carson Smith came in relief and picked-up the win to see his season record advance to 1-2. Carson pitched 2.2 innings, allowed 3 hits, 2 runs (all earned), 0 walks, 2 strike-outs, and hit 1 batter. Josh Parrish picked-up his 3 save of the year and worked a stellar performance. JP pitched 3.0 innings, allowed 1 hit, 0 runs, 1 walk, and 1 strike-out.
The Bearcats defense did not commit an error in the game.
Offensively, Tyler Durant went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored, 1 walk, and a stolen base. Kretz went 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs. Ryno, Camo, Swainey, E, Steve-O, Alex, and Travis all earned a hit in the game. In total, the Bearcats scored 8 runs off of 12 hits, 8 RBIs, 5 walks, and 6 strike-outs.
In Game 2, Northwest lost a heart breaker 2-4 after taking the lead (2-1) into the top of the final frame. Add in 3 runs by MoSo in the top of the final frame, plus a quick 3 & out by the Bearcats, and the team seemed pretty frustrated going into Game 3. Defensively, the Bearcats played another stellar game and were not charged with an error. Jace Anderson worked 6.2 innings, allowed 5 hits, 3 earned runs, 1 walk, and 1 strike-out. Josh Parrish worked 0.1 inning, allowed 2 hits, and 1 run (earned).
Offensively, Eric McGlauflin went 2 for 2 (a double and a home run) with 1 RBI and a run scored. Tyler Durant went 2 for 3 with a double and a RBI. Abernathy, Garber, and Kretzer all earned one hit each in the game. In total, the Bearcats scored 2 runs off of 7 hits, 2 RBIs, 2 walks, and 8 strike-outs.
In Game 3, Northwest lost 2-7 in a lopsided affair. Chase Anderson pitched a complete game and took the loss to see his season record fall to 2-4. Chase worked 7.0 innings, allowed 12 hits, 7 runs (all earned), 0 walks, 2 strike outs, 2 wild pitches, and 1 balk (that wasn't).
Defensively, the Bearcats played their 3rd straight game without a charged error. Sweetness.
Offensively, Tyler Durant went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI, and a run scored. Abernathy, Swain, McGlauflin, Mapes, and Garber all earned a hit in the game. In total, the Bearcats scored 2 runs, off of 7 hits, 2 RBIs, 1 walk, and 3 strike-outs.
In Game 4, Northwest managed a split in the series beat the Lions 9-4 to move their record to 7-17, 6-10 MIAA. Carson Smith pitched a real gem and worked 5.0 innings, allowed 1 hit, 0 runs, 2 walks, 3 strike-outs, and 1 wild pitch. Pat Brady got the start and worked 2.2 innings, allowed 4 hits, 2 runs (1 earned), 4 walks, 2 strike-outs, and 1 wild pitch. Nathaniel Horton came in to relieve Pat and worked 1.1 innings, allowed 1 hit, 2 runs (both earned), 3 walks, and 1 strike-out before giving way to Carson.
Defensively, the Bearcats committed 1 error in the game.
Offensively, Cameron Bedard was the big man on campus with his 4 for 4 day, 4 runs scored and a walk. Eric Swain wasn't far behind in his 3 for 4 performance with 4 RBIs, and 1 run scored. Abernathy went 2 for 5 with 3 runs scored and a spectacular slide at home to score a much needed run that was a close play. Garber, Kretzer, and Travis Green all earned a hit in the game. Brett Paterson went 1 for 4 with a double in the game. In total, the Bearcats scored 9 runs off of 13 hits, 8 RBIs, 5 walks, and 4 strike-outs.
