Weekend Re-Cap - Christian Brothers University

Weekend Re-Cap - Christian Brothers University

Memphis, Tennessee - Northwest played a thrilling series against Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tennessee, over the weekend. Christian Brothers won the series 2 games to 1 with the series coming down to a play at the plate in the last inning of the third and deciding game. Nick Gotta (.364 batting average with 6 RBIs), Garrett Fort (.375 batting average with .545 on-base percentage & 3 stolen bases), Bryce Shea (3.2 IP, 0.00 ERA, 1 walk, 4 strike-outs in 2 relief appearances), and Joseph Hietpas (3.60 ERA, 1-0 record, 2 walks, 4 strike-outs, 5.0 IP) were your series MVPs for Northwest.

Game 1 – Christian Brothers University beat Northwest Missouri State University 5-0 in a 9-inning game that lasted 2 hours, 9 minutes, in front of 225 fans, in 55 degree weather.  With the loss, Northwest's record fell to 0-1, 0-0 MIAA. Anthony Caenepeel earned the started and was a workhorse in the game.  CBU lead was 2-0 heading into the 7th inning.  After the bases were loaded, Jacob Wagner came into the game in relief.  Three runs subsequently scored and were charged to Caenepeel for the eventual final score of 5-0.  The Bearcats’ offense could not get in sync as they only managed four hits.  Defense play was solid.
Bearcat debuts - Jay Hrdlicka made his Bearcat debut, played catcher, and earned his first collegiate start.  Jake Lewis made his Bearcat debut and played designated hitter. Bryce Shea made his Bearcat debut and pitched 1.0 inning in the 8th inning.  Congratulations to Jay, Jake, and Bryce.
Offense – Ozzie Adams was the offensive MVP of the game.  Ozzie went 2 for 3 with a walk.  Nick Gotta hit a triple in the game and went 1 for 4 overall. James Holler also earned a hit and went 1 for 3 overall. Other notables include Jake Lewis earning 2 walks in the game and 0-2 overall, and Garrett Fort with a walk and 0-2 overall. In total, Northwest earned 4 hits, 5 walks, 8 strike-outs, and left 6 runners on base.
Defense – Northwest was charged with 1 error in the game (Adams) that led to 1 unearned run.
Pitching – Anthony Caenepeel was the star of the game. He kept the Bearcats in the game trailing only 2-0 heading into the 7th inning.  Anthony ran into trouble in the 7th, loaded the bases, and did not record an out.  Jacob Wagner came into game in relief. In the end, the 3 inherited runners scored and were charged to Caenepeel to make the score 5.0.  Wagner battled and did not allow any additional runs however. Caenepeel worked 6.0 innings, allowed 8 hits, 5 runs, 4 earned, 0 walks, 8 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and did not hit a batter. Wagner finished the 7th inning and worked 1.0 inning, allowed 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 walks, 0 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, hit 1 batter, and 0 balks. Bryce Shea came into the game in the 8th inning and worked 1.0 inning, allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 0 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter.

Game 2 - Northwest defeated Christian Brothers in game 2 to even the series by the score 11-2. The Bearcats used exemplary pitching and hitting to win the game. Joe Hietpas picked-up the victory in the game. Several Bearcats had terrific days at the plate in the game. Bryce Shea fell 1 out short of picking-up a 3 inning save and was huge in the game. The Bearcats offense took the momentum that Shea produced and exploded for major offensive output late in the game. Northwest evened the series at 1-1 with the big win.  Overall, Northwest's 2016 record stands at 1-1, 0-0 MIAA.
Offense - Nick Gotta was the offensive MVP of the game.  Go-Go-Gotta went 2 for 4 with 4 RBIs and 2 walks. In addition, Kolby Greenslade went 2 for 5 with a RBI, 3 stolen bases, and 2 runs scored in the game. Ozzie Adams went 1 for 5 with a walk and 2 runs scored. Jay Hrdlicka went 1 for 3 with 2 walks, 1 RBI, and a run scored. Jake Lewis went 1 for 5 with a home run, 2 RBIs, and 2 runs scored. Garrett Fort went 1 for 4 with a RBI, 1 stolen base, and 2 runs scored. In total, Northwest earned 8 hits, scored 11 runs, 10 RBIs, 5 walks, 5 strike-outs, and left 10 runners on base.
Defense - Northwest did not commit an error in the game.
Pitching - Joseph Hietpas picked-up the win to move his record to 1-0 after he worked 5.0 innings, allowed 4 hits, 2 runs (both earned), 2 walks, 4 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter. Jacob Wagner came into the game in the 6th inning and worked a fantastic inning of relief.  In total, Jacob worked 1.0 inning, allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 balks, 1 strike-out, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter. John Osborne came into the game in the 7th inning but ran into trouble.  In total, John worked 0.1 inning, allowed 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 walks, 0 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he hit 1 batter.  Bryce Shea came into the game to close it out. Shea worked out of a sticky situation in the bottom of the 7th inning and that momentum led to a Bearcat offensive surge in the 8th. In total, Shea worked 2.2 innings, allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk, 4 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter.

Game 3 - Christian Brothers University defeated Northwest in an absolutely thrilling game where the game tieing run was thrown-out in a play at the plate in the final inning. Northwest lost 5-4 in a 7-inning game but the Cats kept fighting throughout all 21 outs. Northwest's pitching struggled as each of the 3 Bearcat hurlers made their 2016 debuts in the game.  With the loss, Christian Brothers won the three game series, 2-1, and Northwest's record fell to 1-2, 0-0 MIAA. Northwest needed about 1 more foot of space and the game was tied and who knows what else would have happened that inning. Great game.
Offense - Garrett Fort was your offensive MVP of the game.  Garrett went 2 for 2, was hit by a pitch, and stole 2 bags in the game. Nick Gotta went 1 for 3 with a huge double that scored 2 runs to bring the Bearcats to within 1 run in the 7th and last inning of the game. Go-Go-Gotta also drew a walk in the game. Jake Lewis went 1 for 3 with a run scored. Austin Wulff went 1 for 3 with a run scored. James Holler earned a RBI with a fielder's choice. Nick Howard went 0 for 1 with a run scored, 1 RBI, 1 walk, and a strike-out in the game. Kolby Greenslade also drew a walk in the contest. In total, Northwest scored 4 runs off of 5 hits, 4 RBIs, 3 walks, 4 strike-outs, and left 4 runners on base. Garrett Fort was thrown out at home plate trying to tie the game in the Top of the 7th inning off of Gotta's double.  2 runs had scored and Fort was running from 1st. Bang-bang play at the plate.  Epic play by both teams.
Defense - Northwest was charged with 1 error in the game (Gotta).
Pitching - Brad Roberts earned the start and worked 4.1 innings, allowed 3 hits, 2 runs (both earned), 4 walks, 3 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and he did not hit a batter. Opposition Research - Christian Brothers University

Opposition Research - Christian Brothers University

Memphis, Tennessee - Your Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats baseball team travels to Memphis, Tennessee, to take on Christian Brothers University to open the 2016 NCAA season.  Christian Brothers University is a member of the Gulf South Athletics Conference of the NCAA Division 2.  The Gulf South Conference boasts member institutions such as Delta State, West Georgia, and North Alabama.  The Bearcats will play three nine-inning games against Christian Brothers with the first game on Saturday, February 6th at 1pm, game two on Sunday, February 7th at 1pm, and game three on Monday, February 8, at 1pm.

The Christian Brothers baseball team has played one game in 2016 according to its website.  Christian Brothers enter the Northwest series with a 1-0 record after they beat Lymoyne-Owen (Tennessee) by the score 5-4.  In the game against L-O, Christian Brothers was trailing 4-2 heading into the bottom of the 9th inning then they scored three runs to walk-off with a win.  CB opened the scoring in that game when Scott Pala reached on an error with two outs in the bottom of the second inning.  After the error, Nick Traylor and Michael Halley both singled to load the bases for Mickey Smith.  Smith draws a walk to earn the RBI and put the score 1-0. LO tied the game in the top of the fourth inning when with a triple and a RBI ground-out.  LO took the lead in the top of the 6th with back-to-back walks and a double to lead 3-1.  LO adds to its lead by an additional run in the top of the 8th inning to make the score 4-1.  In the bottom of the 8th inning, CB's Casey Goodwin doubled and later scored off of Michael Halley fielder's choice to cut the deficit to 4-2.  In the bottom of the ninth inning, CB scored three runs without making an out. Christian Halterman was hit by a pitch then Joe Mattson and Caleb Goodwin each singled to load the bases.  With the bases loaded, Riley Kilgore was hit by a pitch to score a run. Then Casey Goodwin walked with the bases loaded to tie the game. Then, CB's Scott Pala walked to score the winning run, 5-4.

Notable offense players -

Michael Halley (batted lead-off) went 2 for 4 with a sacrifice and 1 RBI;
Mickey Smith (batted 2nd) went 2 for 3 with 2 walks and 1 RBI;
Casey Goodwin (batted 7th) went 2 for 5.

Pitching - CB used six pitchers in the game.  The notable pitching performances in the game -

Patrick Gurley - 1.0 IP, 1 K, 0 ER;
Jack Parker - 2.0 IP, 3 K, 0 ER;
Matthew Mills - 2.0 IP, 2 K, 1 ER;
Gil Erwin - 2.0 IP, 4 K, 1 ER.
Peyton Sanderlin - 1.0 IP, 2 K, 0 ER, and picked-up the win in the game.

CB used 14 players in the line-up in the game.  The game took three hours to complete with an announced attendance of 300 people.  CB hit two doubles and did not attempt to steal a base in the game.  CB was not charged with an error in the game.

CB does not post its players' statistics from previous seasons so there is no chance to compare the top returning players.

In conclusion, Christian Brothers University is a quality NCAA Division 2 opponent from an excellent Conference.  CB will be an excellent test for your Bearcats.  Thankfully, CB has only played one game so both squads are essentially entering the game with the same amount of experience to start the series.  Northwest is going to need its starting pitching and bullpen to carry the load this series until the offense can get its timing down with the speed of outdoor competition.  In addition, the Bearcats defense needs to focus and execute in all plays and avoid giving extra outs to the other squad to minimize the pitchers' pitch count.  Pitching and Defense - same plan this year as it is every year.

Veteran Profile - Joseph Hietpas

Veteran Profile - Joseph Hietpas

Maryville, Mo. - Joseph Hietpas is disturbingly angry with nasty stuff on the mound.  That pretty much sums up the perfect starting pitcher for the B2R. Joe is my kind of guy. Joe went through the MIAA as a freshman and excelled on the mound because he had the mental make-up to handle such adversity. Joe and Anthony Caenepeel were the top two pitchers for the Bearcats in 2015.  Caenepeel was a Sophomore and Joe was a Freshman. Joe stands 6'2" and weighs 190 pounds.  The Sophomore comes from Fairfield, Iowa, and graduated from Fairfield High School.  Here is the write-up from Bearcatsports.com:

2015
Named to the MIAA Academic honor roll ... appeared in 13 games, starting 11 times on the mound ... went 57.1 innings on the year with a 4.87 ERA ... tallied 56 strikeouts while allowing just 27 walks ... picked up a win over Fort Hays State (March 21), going 5.1 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits ... got his second win over Emporia State (Apr. 11), pitching 5.2 innings with six strikeouts ... got a win over Missouri Western (Apr. 23), pitching 7.0 innings, allowing just two hits aond one run, striking out six ... had a season-high nine strikeouts against Northeastern State (Feb. 20).

Looking deeper into the 2015 statistics, Joe had a 4.87 ERA and went 3-5 on the year with 13 appearances and 11 starts, 1 complete game, 1 save, worked 57.1 innings, allowed 60 hits, 31 earned runs, 27 walks, 56 strike-outs, 2 wild pitches, and hit 2 batters.  Joe led the team in ERA and opposing batting average in 2015. Joe was second on the team on innings pitched, starts, and strike-outs.

B2R analysis - Joe's success is an absolute must if the Bearcats are going to accomplish their goals this season.  In a completely unscientific theory, the B2R hypothesizes he should stand between the bullpen and the field, call Joe a name, then open the gate to the field having sufficiently prodded the bear with a stick.  The MIAA baseball coaches have published their thoughts about Northwest through the pre-season poll.  Well, Joe will tell their opinion does not equal his reality.  This can be a very special year for the Bearcats baseball team because of its weekend starting rotation.  Joe's 2-1 strike-outs to walk ratio is 2nd only to Caenepeel...by 6 one-hundredths of a point...and he's a Freshman. I can't wait to see Joe with a year of experience and Joe Quinlin weight training.  Look for great things from Joseph Hietpas in 2016.

Poking the bear with a stick is successful.  See a clip from the movie Waterboy...

Go get'em Joe.

Veteran Profile - Anthony Caenepeel

Veteran Profile - Anthony Caenepeel

Maryville, Mo. - Anthony burst onto the scene at Northwest Missouri State University after transferring to Maryville from North Central Missouri College.  The Willard, Missouri, native stands 6'00" tall and weighs 190 lbs.  Anthony will enter the 2016 NCAA as a Junior.  Anthony battled his way to becoming your Friday starter for Northwest.  A significant accomplishment for anyone, let alone a Sophomore.  Anthony's swagger matches his awesome hair and million dollar smile.  The B2R is a big fan of the 1-9.  Anthony is part of the "Fab 4" where 3 of the 4 weekend starting pitchers were first year players.  Heading into the 2015 season, Northwest lost its Ace, Ryker Fox, and #2 starter Austin Warren to graduation.  Anthony stepped-up to fill the void left by Fox to become the Friday starter.  Here is the write-up from Bearcatsports.com:

2015Named All-MIAA honorable mention ... earned MIAA Academic Honor Roll accolades ... started 11 games as Northwest's No. 1 starter ... pitched 66.2 innings ... was 4-3 on the year ... struck out 62 batters while walking just 29 ... worked 6.1 scoreless innings at Central Missouri (Mar. 7) with five strikeouts ... struck out 12 batters against Fort Hays State (Mar. 20) in a win ... also had wins against Cameron (Feb. 13), UNK (Mar. 13) and Pittsburg State (Mar. 27).

B2R thoughts - For a team that won 20 games in 2015, Anthony was credited for 4 of those wins with a 4-3 record.  Looking into the 2015 statistics, Anthony started 11 games (every appearance he made that season), earned a 5.40 ERA with 2 complete games, worked 66.2 innings, allowed 70 hits, 40 earned runs, 29 walks, 62 strike-outs, 6 wild pitches, 9 hit batsmen, and 1 balk.  In total, Anthony was 2nd on the team in ERA, starts, hit batters, and opposing batting average, first in win-loss percentage, wins, innings pitched, strike-outs, runners picked-off, and batters struck-out looking.

Northwest's 2016 season is going to go as far as the arms of Caenepeel, Hietpas, and Roberts will take the Cats. As the 2016 season nears, the other MIAA schools predicted to go higher can boast strong weekend starters and powerful line-ups.  Caenepeel is the equalizer.  Frankly a dark-horse candidate for MIAA Pitcher of the Year along with Joseph Hietpas.  The B2R looks forward to watching Anthony take the hill for the Bearcats in 2016.

You draw your own comparisons between Anthony and a notable fictional baseball character -

Zach is the guy every American Dad wants their kid to grow-up to become - a man.  Zach volunteered for the National Guard and will soon graduate from Northwest Missouri State University. Zach plays catcher but his athleticism and arm strength could play any corner outfield position.  Leader. Good dude. One in a million. Here is the write-up from Bearcatsports.com:

2015Appeared in eight games ... made two starts ... had a pair of hits and one RBI ... drew one walk ... had one sacrifice fly against Culver Stockton (Mar. 25).

2014
Appeared in seven games … started in one of those games … recorded one double with a run scored against Pittsburg State (4/26).

2013
Appeared in four games... tallied one RBI on the season

In 2016, Zach will battle for playing at catcher and listed as a utility player.  To all the Moms and Dads out there, take your daughters and sons to the Bearcat baseball games and make sure you introduce them to Zach Douglas.  You will be glad you did.

Veteran Profile - Derek Meyer

Veteran Profile - Derek Meyer

Maryville, Mo. - B2R features Derek Meyer in today's veteran profile.  Derek Meyer enters the 2016 NCAA season as the Bearcats returning starter at Catcher.  The Lincoln Pius X High School alum stands 5'8" and weighs 160 pounds.  Derek is a Senior and comes from Lincoln, Nebraska.  Derek is a favorite among the guys in the locker room.  He interacts with the young guys and veterans alike with country charm and orneriness.  I bet that million dollar smile of his has persuaded others many times through out his life.  Regarding baseball, Derek is one tough dude.  The kid flat out plays the game so well and he does so with such energy and love for the game.  During the past 3 years, Derek has played his way into the line-up despite going up against older and/or bigger players.  For example, Freshman Derek battled Senior JJ Baccari for catching duties to bat .310 in 2013.  As a Sophomore, he split time with Junior Transfer and 6'3" Blake Hardegree in 2014.  Last year, Derek earned the starting nod against Senior Hardegree and batted .269 on the year.  In 2016, there are several players battling for the starting catcher position.  Derek has proven over and over again it does not matter who comes into catch for the Bearcats, he'll be the starting catcher.  Hard worker. Good dude. He's a guy that I would love see coach baseball to kids because he cares for people, plays the game the right way, and possesses quality teaching attributes.  Here is the write-up from the Bearcats website:

2015
Named to the MIAA Academic honor roll ... appeared in 39 games, making 34 starts ... hit .269 on the year with 28 hits and four doubles ... scored 14 runs, tallied 12 RBI and drew nine walks ... stole two bases ... threw out six basestealers ... had a 98.5 fielding percentage ... had seven multi-hit games ... had three multi-RBI games ... went 3-for-5 against UNK (March 13), scoring two runs with an RBI and a double.

2014
Earned MIAA academic honors … played in 18 games … started in 11 of those games … recorded nine hits, six RBI, and nine runs scored on the season … led the team in fielding percentage at 1.000 … had one stolen base …  went 1-for-1 with an RBI and two runs scored against Lincoln (3/6).

2013
Started 18 games while appearing in 25... hit one home run with 10 RBI's... had a .310 batting average for the season... second on the team in sac bunts with five... fifth on the team in fielding percentage at .984

B2R thoughts - In 2015, Derek hit .269 with 39 appearances, 34 starts, 104 plate appearances, 14 runs scored, 28 hits, 4 doubles, 12 RBIs, 32 total bases, .308 slugging percentage, 9 walks, 2 hit by pitches, .336 slugging percentage, 2 stolen bases in 2 attempts, only 3 errors and a .985 fielding percentage.

You can count the B2R as a big Derek Meyer fan.  Derek embodies the meaning to be a Bearcat - hard worker, earns everything he gets, blue collar, and humble.  Expect great things from Derek Meyer in 2016 and in life.
