Series re-cap - Missouri Southern
The B2R is happy to report that it had a chance to finally attend live NCAA baseball action in 2013 (only half-way through the season). It was a beautiful weekend in Maryville with 60 degree weather and the Bearcats wearing the home white uniforms. There is nothing better than Bearcats, baseball, home white uniforms, and a sunny day. Northwest played well in both Saturday games despite losing both. Game 1 was a tug-of-war between two exemplary pitching performances by each team's starters. The B2R was very impressed with Ryker Fox and Nathanial Horton. Tyler Barth provided a crucial hold to close out the 6th and start the 7th innings. A bang-bang play at the plate where Northwest's runner was tagged out at home after a terrific throw from the Southern right fielder preserved Southern's chances of winning the game in the bottom of the 7th inning. In game 2, the hard-luck Bearcats lost a heart breaker in the final inning of the game. Marcus Garrett was lights out in the game. The best the B2R has seen him pitch. Marcus held Southern to 1 hit through 6 innings. Some tough luck errors in the final frame resulted in 4 runs scored, 3 of which were unearned. In game 3, Southern got out to an early lead and added to it. The Bearcats could not match the Southern track meet offense. As a result, the Bearcats are swept at home. From what the B2R saw, I'm proud of how the 'Cats played in the game. The breaks were against the 'Cats on Saturday but the fact remains is that the team has put both Western (a top 20 team) and Southern (plus .500 conference record) on the ropes in 3 of the last 4 games. The Cats have a huge week ahead as they battle for a post-season conference tournament spot in 2013.

Series Preview - Missouri Western 2
Series Preview - Missouri Western 2
The Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats baseball team plays a mid-week double-header against Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph on Tuesday, March 26, 2013, with the first pitch of game one set for 4pm on the campus of Missouri Western. Northwest just swept the Truman State Bulldogs by winning three straight games in Kirksville, Missouri, to advance their 2013 record to 9-16, 7-13 MIAA. Missouri Western has won 18 of their last 19 games and lost their first conference game last weekend versus Central Oklahoma. The Griffons are ranked #20 in the NCAA Division 2 baseball poll in the most recent poll. The Griffons 2013 record is 19-4, 6-1 at home, 9-3 on the road, 4-0 at neutral sites, and 14-1 in the MIAA. The Griffons' offense is on a remarkable streak. It is statistically the most productive offense the MIAA has seen in some time. The Griffons' batters are getting on base nearly half of the time. While the Griffons' defense is suspect, the pitching is also very solid. The Bearcats' pitchers must keep the Griffon batters uncomfortable and off-balance to limit their effectiveness. The pitchers must pound the strike zone and not give away free passes to the bases. The Bearcats' defense must help the Bearcats' pitchers by not giving extra outs in a frame. The Bearcats offense is going to have to run with the Western offense's nearly 10 runs per game average. The keys to success for the Bearcats include (1) avoiding allowing the big inning, (2) keep the Griffons off the board early in the game, and (3) score some runs early to pressure the Griffons' pitching staff and defense.

Bearcats Shaping up
Series Re-cap: Truman State University
The Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats baseball team swept the Truman State Bulldogs by winning all three games of the series this weekend. Northwest played exemplary offense and defense in the series. Northwest's pitching was terrific. The Bearcats unloaded on the Bulldogs this weekend. I thought the Rocky training scenes were appropriate for this report because the team has taken some punches, had some adversity, but is battling through the adversity. Success in Baseball = How you deal with adversity
The Northwest Missouri State Bearcats baseball team has had a tough start to the 2013 season. Following the mid-week sweep by the Missouri Western Griffons, the Bearcats are 6-16 overall, 4-13 MIAA. Due to snow, the Bearcats have played all but 4 games on the road. The team is frustrated. The Bearcats have struggled in all phases - pitching, offense, and defense.
Being successful in baseball means dealing with adversity. How you deal with adversity is directly related to how successful you will be in baseball - and life. Here is fact: every person that has played the game of baseball has been a consistent failure. The greatest offensive star in baseball, Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox, finished the 1941 season with a .406 batting average, which meant he failed nearly 60% of the time. Nearly seven decades later, no other major league baseball player has failed at or less, since. Babe Ruth hit 714 home runs...and struck out 1,330 times. Cy Young, of which all baseball pitchers covet to aspire to, lost 316 games as a major leaguer.
The reality in baseball, and life, is that success in both are directly related to how you manage failure and adversity. Baseball is the fabric of our Country's heritage because at its roots is the fundamental fact that a collective team effort requires individual responsibility, and personal sacrifice, for the greater good. In many ways baseball is American heritage because America's heritage is agriculture, America's family farms. Draw parallels with Paul Harvey's poem "So God made a farmer":
"It had to be somebody who’d plow deep and straight and not cut corners; somebody to seed, weed, feed, breed, and rake and disk and plow and plant and tie the fleece and strain the milk and replenish the self-feeder and a hard week’s work with a five-mile drive to church."
Personal sacrifice for the greater good. For family. Once the batting order is set, your turn at the plate will come. Baseball doesn't permit a game to be dominated by star players whose teammates are simply along for the ride. It takes time and patience to understand baseball. Becoming proficient at its skills are hard to do. Dare I say, very hard. A round ball, a round bat, both moving too fast to think."Somebody who would bale a family together with the soft, strong bonds of sharing; who would laugh and then sigh, and then reply with smiling eyes when his son says he want to spend his life doing what dad does – So God made a Farmer"
But baseball is great because natural physical gifting and athleticism are no predictors of baseball success. Look at the major league baseball hall of fame - players do not possess amazing size, strength, speed. Hall of Famers are short, skinny, fat, slow, fast, muscular, flabby, intelligent, or ignorant.
Learning to succeed in baseball is learning to persevere in the face of constant adversity. Constant pressure.
If the Bearcats are going to shift the direction of this season they will need the kind of moral courage that keeps persisting in the face of inevitable and constant adversity. You see, the key to the Bearcats' success, baseball's fundamental bedrock, is the Cats need to have confidence. If they don't get two hits in today's game, they'll get them in the next game. Every outside-strike called by a umpire gets the Cats closer to a home run. Persistent daily commitment to succeed in the face of constant adversity, driven by confidence, must prevail.
The Bearcats cannot win every game from here to the end of the season. No batter will bat 1.000. No pitcher will go without a loss. But really, is a bad break, a bad call, a bad bounce, a bad game, or a benching, really adversity? Is it really "failure" when its a part of the game? We know adversity will happen in every play of every baseball game. That's what makes the game compelling. What makes life worth living. One day the pressure, adversity or failure in baseball will turn to adversity in life. A disputed strike zone will turn into a mortgage payment. Playing time will turn into a marriage with your sweetheart. A bang-bang play will turn into an infant and the sudden realization someone's life is your ultimate responsibility. And when it comes to life, there cannot be failure. So really, where is the real pressure? Where is the real adversity? In baseball, today's error turns into tomorrow's game saving double-play. Today's strike-out will turn into tomorrow's game-winning RBI. Until the Bearcats can embrace the adversity in baseball, the failure in baseball, and have the hope and confidence to concentrate in the present moment, then the team's performance will remain at its present level.

The Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats baseball team lost both games against Fort Hays State this week to fall to 4-14, 4-11 MIAA in the 2013 season. Series Preview - Fort Hays State
Series Preview - Fort Hays State
The Northwest Missouri State Bearcats baseball team plays a 2-game double header against Fort Hays State in Hays, Kansas on Tuesday, March 12, 2013. Northwest swept Washburn in Topeka in a mid-week clash last week. The Bearcats 3-game series against the Central Missouri Mules was cancelled due to weather conditions. The 'Cats are 4-12, 4-9 MIAA so far in the 2013 NCAA regular season. The Fort Hays Tigers are 8-7 in 2013 and just finished a weekend series against Emporia State.
NWMSU FHSU
Batting Average .266 .347
Runs 5.375 runs per game 7.77 runs per game
Slugging % .389 .479
Walks 4.06 per game 3.38 per game
Strike Outs 5.19 per game 6.92 per game
On-base % .369 .415
Errors 1.5 errors per game 1.85 per game
Fielding % .959 .948
ERA 8.32 7.09
The Tigers are a free-swinging offensive bunch. Hopefully the Bearcats pitching staff can expand the zone and get the Tigers to swing at bad pitches. It certainly is worth seeing how patient the Tigers will be considering they strike out nearly one time per inning and draw nearly one less walk per game. The Tigers struggle fielding the ball and the pitching staff has not blown the doors off of anybody. If the Bearcats pitching and defense can execute, the 'Cats can get out out of Hays with a victory or two.

B2R analysis - Despite last weekend's solid improvement, things seemed to revert back to last series' game 1 performance where the Bearcats did not execute on defense, offense, and pitching. The most troubling statistic to the B2R is the Bearcats committed 8 errors which led to 4 unearned runs in the 3-game series. Northwest's is only playing .004 points better defense in 2013 then it did in 2012 but is hitting 63 points less. Northwest's pitching is allowing 3 1/4 more earned runs in 2013 then it did in 2012. Northwest has yet to have a real home game due to snow in the Maryville-area. The B2R believes the Cats have qualified for a name change to the Northwest Missouri State 'TOURING' Bearcats because the road show has yet to have a break. Here's hoping the team can make adjustments for this week's match-ups against Washburn and Central Missouri and take 3 of 5. With that said, the B2R is more hopeful about watching baseball in Maryville for once, too.

The B2R Chow Line will have subs for the guys for the Sunday double-header. Last week, B2R and family made up sack lunches for the guys. The 2013 season has been a logistically difficult year for the Chow Line because of all the scheduling changes so far. But, the guys still get fed and they really appreciate all the support. If you haven't contributed to the B2R Chow Line, please consider doing so as soon as possible. Series Re-cap - Lindenwood University
Series Re-cap - Lindenwood University
Northwest won 1 of 3 games against Lindenwood University last weekend. The series was originally scheduled to be the home opener for the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats baseball team but had to be moved due to snow. By agreement, the series was moved to Sauget, Illinois, and played at GCS Ballpark (a minor league professional baseball stadium).
In Game 1, Northwest lost the game 11-5 to fall to 1-8, 1-4 MIAA on the year.
Offensively, Northwest was paced by Eric McGlauflin and his 3 for 4 performance with a home run, 3 RBIs, 1 run scored. JJ Baccari went 2 for 3 (including a double), with a walk, 2 runs scored while playing catcher. Cameron Bedard went 1 for 4 (a home run) with 2 RBIs and 1 run scored. Eric Swain also had a hit in the game. Also worth noting, Abernathy picked-up 2 walks and scored a run with 2 official at-bats in the game.
Defensively, the Bearcats had a tough game and were charged with 3 errors (2 by Huske and 1 by Swain). Northwest executed 1 double-play in the game.
Pitching, Blane Reutter earned the start but had a tough day and saw his 2013 record fall to 1-2. In total, he worked 5.0 innings, allowed 8 hits, 6 runs (5 earned), 3 walks, 4 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and hit 0 batters. Pat Brady came in relief of Blane in the 6th inning, faced 5 batters, and did not record an out in a hard-luck outing. In total, Pat worked 0.0 innings, allowed 4 hits, 3 runs (all earned), 1 walk, 0 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and hit 0 batters. Rob Henrichs came in the 6th inning to relieve Pat and worked 2.1 innings, allowed 3 hits, 2 runs (only 1 earned), 1 walk, 2 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and hit 0 batters. Brian Schmiedt came in the game in the 8th inning to work the final 1.2 innings of the game and allowed 0 runs, 0 hits, 0 walks, 3 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and hit 0 batters.
B2R analysis - Despite the score, Northwest's offense could not figure out the Lindenwood starter, D. Terrell, who worked 7.0 innings of 1 run ball. Four of Northwest's five runs came in the 8th and 9th innings when the game was not in doubt and Lindenwood brought in younger bullpen pitchers to close out the game. Even though statistically Northwest's pitching may come across as a "culprit" of the team's record, the offense is not producing when the game is close forcing the pitching to make perfect pitches. The Northwest defense must execute much better, too, and committing 3 errors in the game is a recipe for a loss. Look, bottom line, Northwest is not going to win many games if the team allows more than 1 run per inning in the game. But, the issue is not just pitching. The bats have to got to produce early in games and the defense need to make plays to keep runners off the base paths. My gut says the guys are pressing. If the team can adjust their approach to live in the moment of every pitch with confidence in themselves and peace in their hearts, I believe Northwest will execute better in all phases of the game and pick-up for victories in the process.
In game 2, Northwest lost the first game of a 7-inning game which is a part of a Monday double-header by the score of 7-4 to see their 2013 record fall to 1-9, 1-6 MIAA.
Offensively, Northwest was paced by Cameron Bedard with his 2 for 4 performance with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs. Abernathy, Kanger, Durant, Singleton, and Huske all earned hits in the game. In total , Northwest scored 4 runs off of 7 hits, 4 RBIs, 3 walks, and 1 strike-out.
Defensively, Northwest committed 1 error (by a pitcher) in the game. Northwest did not execute a double-play in the game.
Pitching, Ryker Fox earned the start but picked-up the loss to see his 2013 record fall to 0-3. In total, Ryker worked 6.0 innings, allowed 3 hits, 5 runs (4 earned), 2 walks, 2 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and hit 0 batters. Ryker was cruising along and only allowed 1 run through the game's first 5 innings. Ryker ran into trouble in the 6th inning and allowed 3 runs to score in that frame. The game was 4-3 Lindenwood's lead in the Top of the 7th and final frame when Ryker allowed a single to the first batter of the inning. Tyler Barth came in relief of Ryker and worked the final inning. In total, Tyler worked 1.0 inning, allowed 3 hits, 2 runs (both earned), one run was charged to Ryker, too, the guy tha singled to start the inning, 0 walks, 0 strike-outs, 1 wild pitch, 0 balks, and hit 0 batters.
B2R analysis - Northwest's defense executed better in game 2. Northwest's offense executed better in game 2, too. The result was North held a lead until the 6th inning. The Bearcats' bullpen is trying to figure out roles for guys. I am guessing there are injury issues because I'm not seeing guys pitch late in games that I think would be doing so. Tyler Barth is getting a lot of opportunities to sew down the late game action. The 'pen will get in a "rotation" soon enough but for now it is exciting to see who steps up to the opportunity. The B2R is happy to see Kanger getting his opportunity to showcase his talents so soon in his collegiate career. The Bearcats need Steven Garber though to bust out of a slow start though if the team is going to reach its potential in 2013. Count me as a Steven Garber fan. His demeanor is as steady as I have ever seen in baseball. Go Cats.
In game 3, Northwest defeated Lindenwood 5-4 to see their 2013 record advance to 2-9, 2-6 MIAA.
Offensively, Steven Garber and Charlie Krueger led the way for the Bearcats. Garber went 2 for 4 at the plate with a double. Krueger went 2 for 3 with a double, a stolen base, a RBI, and a run scored. In addition, Eric McGlauflin went 1 for 4 with a RBI, a run scored. Cameron Bedard went 1 for 4 (a double) with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Alex Singleton went 1 for 3 with a walk and a RBI. Brandon Huske drew 2 walks in 2 official plate appearances and scored a run in the game. In total, Northwest scored 5 runs off of 7 hits, 5 RBIs, 4 walks, and left 7 runners on base.
Defensively, Northwest executed 2 double-plays in the game. The 'Cats did not commit an error.
Pitching, Marcus Garrett earned the start and picked-up the win to see his 2013 record advance to 1-1. In total, Garrett worked 5.0 innings, allowed 4 hits, 2 runs (both earned), 1 walk, 5 strike-outs, 0 wild pitches, 0 balks, and hit 3 batters in the game. Chase Anderson came in relief in the 6th inning and worked 3.0 innings, allowed 4 hits, 1 earned run, 2 walks, 2 strike-outs, 1 wild pitch, 0 balks, and hit 0 batters. Nathanial Horton picked-up his first save of the year and worked the final inning of the game. In total, Horton worked 1.0 inning, allowed 2 hits, 1 earned run, 0 walks, 0 strike-outs, 2 wild pitches, 0 balks, and hit 0 batters.
B2R analysis - In a game where Northwest's offense produced early and the guys played solid defense, the Bearcats win the game. Northwest's pitching did a good job in the game. Northwest scored 4 runs in the first inning and the 5th run in the 3rd inning. Defense and pitching took care of the rest. Despite a disappointing 1-2 record in the series, Northwest improved its execution on the field every game from a start where the team was close to getting 10-run-ruled, to losing the game late in the game, to winning the game. I am excited to see how the 'Cats execute in game 1 of the Central Oklahoma series.
