St. Joseph News Press & Northwestbearcats.com - Northwest baseball signs 3 for 2014
Photo courtesy of Northwestbearcats.com, your source for Bearcats Athletics |
Regarding the early signings to the Class of 2014, Coach Darin Loe said, “These three guys are a great beginning to our 2014 recruiting class,” said Loe. “They fulfill our immediate needs and we expect all of them to come in and compete for playing time immediately.”
In an article published by the St. Joseph News-Press (see a link to their story below):
http://www.newspressnow.com/opinion/blogs/sports/west_by_northwest/article_d88c035c-de1c-574f-a37c-77d9b952b3cd.html
"Northwest Missouri State baseball coach Darin Loe announced the signings of three incoming student-athletes Thursday, a class which includes Brad Roberts (Cairo, Mo.), Nick McKinney (Naperville, Ill.) and Jay Hrdlicka (West Des Moines, Iowa).
All three players will be freshmen starting in the fall of 2014."
Here is a breakdown of each signee from various media reports:
Brad Roberts - According to multiple media outlets, Brad is a stand-out two-sport athlete excelling in both baseball and basketball. Roberts received "multiple" All-State awards in both baseball and basketball. In both fall and spring baseball, Roberts boasts a 33-4 record with 5 saves. In what must be a career high school total, Roberts worked 217 innings, allowed 49 hits, struck-out 367 batters, and walked 79 batters. Brad's goal is to compete for a starting rotation position in his first season with the Bearcats. Jeff Schleicher, Roberts' high school baseball coach, spoke very highly of the young man and what he meant to coach's baseball program.
Brad was an All-Conference pitcher for Northeast R-IV High School in Cairo, Missouri in 2013 and earned his team's MVP award. He was named All-District and All-State in each of the past 3 seasons.
Outside of baseball, Roberts is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, and Honor Roll.
You can listen to some interviews with Brad by clicking on the link below:
http://centralmoinfo.com/ROBERTS-WILL-STAY-A-BEARCAT/17790039
Coach Loe's comments about Brad according to Northwestbearcats.com, “Brad is a polished hard throwing right handed pitcher that we expect to come in and make an immediate impact,” explained Loe. “He is a great overall athlete as he had to make a difficult decision whether to play basketball or baseball. We are certainly excited he choose to play baseball at the next level.”
Nick McKinney - Standing 6'2", weighs 180 lbs, the right-handed 18-year-old baseball player is a pitcher and will graduate from Downers Grove South High School in Naperville, Illinois. According to a recruiting site, Nick's fastball tops out at 83 mph with a change-up and breaking ball in the low 70s.
Here is a personal statement from McKinney from the site: "Hi Coach, My name is Nick McKinney and I will be a Senior at Downers Grove South HS this upcoming year. I have been playing baseball ever sense I can remember It's my absolute passion. I pride myself on my work ethic, and the ability to excel in any situation I am thrown into whether it be on or off the field. I am a side-arm pitcher. I command my fastball, changeup, and slider very well and throwing strikes and not walking any batters is very important to me. As a side-arm pitcher my mindset is to pound the zone while keeping the ball low to generate outs for my team. My academics are very important to me and my family. I've maintained a 3.0 GPA or higher throughout high school and my goal for Senior year is a 4.0 GPA and to raise my ACT this fall. I excel in the areas of History and English. I am open to looking at schools in all divisions and locations. My goal is to find a program where I can get a great education while contributing on the mound. I will be working extremely hard this offseason on my mechanics and improving myself as a pitcher in all aspects. I hope to hear from you and possibly set up a phone call or visit. Thanks for taking the time to look at my profile. Nick McKinney"
You can watch video and link to the site by clicking below:
http://www.ncsasports.org/baseball-recruiting/il/downers-grove/downers-grove-south-high-school/nick-mckinney
According to Northwestbearcats.com, "McKinney comes to Northwest after a standout career at Downers Grove South High School. The right handed side-armer had a 1.76 ERA in 22 innings as a junior, recording seven saves. He won a state and a summer league title as well as an Illinois Regional title. An honor roll student, McKinney played for coach Darren Orel."
Coach Loe's comments about McKinney: “Nick is a side arm pitcher who has a great feel for that unique arm angle,” Loe said. “He has had great success at the high school level and we expect Nick to be a key performer coming out of our bullpen.”
Jay Hrdlicka - Standing 5'10", weighing 180 lbs, Jay will graduate from Valley High School in West Des Moines, Iowa. His primary position is Catcher and his secondary position is 2B according to a recruiting website. His 60' speed is clocked at 7.48 seconds. Jay's top speed at throwing from the outfield is clocked at 78 mph, while his top speed throwing from the infield is 77 mph, and finally his top speed clocked at throwing from the catcher position is 77 mph.
You can watch video of Hrdlicka by clicking on the recruiting site's link below but it requires a subscription to view:

Images of Hrdlicka are also available by clicking on the recruiting site below:

According to Northwestbearcats.com, "Hrdlicka earned All-America honorable mention accolades from Perfect Game last season while playing for head coach Brady Weber at Valley High School. He also earned all-tournament team honors at the Kernels Foundation Tournament."
Outside of baseball, Hrdlicka is an academic all-conference honoree and earned an academic letter four times in high school. He is also a member of the National Honor Society.
Coach Loe's comments about Hrdlicka: “Jay is a solid defensive catcher with a great swing,” said Loe. “He can throw as good or better than any other catcher I have had the opportunity to coach. He is a guy that will come into our program and immediately have the ability to completely shut down our opponents running game.”

Bearcats Playing Professional Baseball - Jacob Raffaele
Bearcats playing professional baseball - Jacob Raffaele
Jacob Raffaele recently made his debut with the Australian League Baseball team, Brisbane Bandits. The Bandits won 3 games of a four-game series from the Adelaide Bite. Jacob was invited to pitch for a farm/development club to the Brisbane Bandits but made the Brisbane 22 man roster as one of the 10 import positions! It is very difficult to make a roster spot as an Import Player because you usually have to have MLB affiliate experience (A-, A+, AA and MLB 40 man roster). All players, Australian and imports, have MLB affiliation experience and using this summer ball to prep for US MLB Spring Training! Jacob's goal is to stay up on 22 man roster all year much like Canada this summer, and if he can do that it will be a real accomplishment due to the talent there!
Way to go Jacob. Keep it up!!

Game notes -
Bases loaded, two outs in 3-0 game, top 6th; Ks LH hitter on three pitches . . . Plenty of MLB scouts there!
Goes out in top of 7th to face 9, 1, 2 (LH) hitters; 1B, FO7, FO8 (both heavy balls)! 23 pitches total, 17 strikes, his last LH hitter must have fouled off about 5-7 pitches on a full count before the FO8. Long season and he's hopeful he can keep progressing . . .
Jacob posted a 3W-2L-3S, .235OBA reg season, and 1S, .215OBA in playoffs in Canada this summer for the London Majors. Jacob received invite to the Carina Red Sox in Brisbane for an opportunity to pitch his way up to ABL Brisbane Bandits. After four outings with Carina, 15.1IP, 12H, 8BB, 16K, .213OBA, he received invite to workout with Bandits. His bullpens and outing during their first Spring Training game: 8th IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2Ks earned him the move up and opportunity!
Way to go Jacob. Keep it up!!

Camouflage Jersey Fundraiser this Saturday, November 9, 2013
The B2R wanted to remind everybody to attend this Saturday's (November 9) Texas Hold'em fundraising card tournament at the Maryville Country Club, 25867 Icon Road, Maryville. Registration starts at 5pm. Tournament starts at 6pm. Player buy-in cost is $40. Cash prizes for the top six finishers. Refreshments will be provided and a cash bar will be available.
The B2R's goal is to raise funds to purchase camouflage jerseys to pay tribute to the US Armed Forces in honor of the late Matt Mason, Navy SEAL, NWMSU alumnus and Bearcat Baseball player. The Northwest Baseball Coaches support this initiative and agreed to wear the special camouflage jerseys during a game in every weekend series this upcoming NCAA season.
Matthew D. Mason graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in 1998 with a bachelor's degree in geography. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1999 and completed SEAL training two years later and achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer.
In 2004, Mason was seriously wounded during the second battle for Fallujah, Iraq, and underwent an extensive rehabilitation. Upon the completion of his rehabilitation, he requested a return to active duty in a combat zone. During his military career, Matt was repeatedly recognized for valor and received the Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars, a Joint Service Commendation, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, two Combat Action ribbons, two Presidential Unit citations and numerous other honors.
Matt was killed in 2011 in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan. The Chinook helicopter was hit August 6 by a rocket-propelled grenade. All 30 Americans and eight Afghans on board were killed.
May God bless Matt Mason, his family and friends, and the Servicemen and Servicewomen of the Armed Forces of the United States of America.

A short biography of CJ:
"I am currently a Senior at Riverside Brookfield High School. I am 6’1” and weigh 165 pounds. My personal best sixty yard dash time is 6.60 seconds. As a freshman, I was the starting shortstop on the sophomore team. Also as a sophomore, I was moved up to the Varsity as starting right fielder. I made Academic All Conference as a sophomore, and have maintained a 3.7 grade point average through my three years of high school. As a sophomore, I hit in the “3” hole and started in the outfield. After my Senior season, I will have had three years of experience at the Varsity level. I am currently the starting center fielder, however I played 18 games as the starting shortstop. I believe I bring many great things to a team. I am a leader, and I am continuously working to get better. I believe that there is always room for improvement in my game either physically or mentally. I take criticism well and strive to be that better player. I always give 100% and consider myself a go-getter. I have had the desire and mentality of playing baseball in college, and it is what I have been working to achieve the last twelve years. I wish to go to a school that will challenge me both academically and athletically. I would also prefer to stay in the Midwest region, but I am definitely leaving my options open. I am looking into any school that has my field of study as well. I am looking for a medium sized school where I would feel comfortable at. I am looking to play at the highest level of competition my athletic abilities will allow. My desirable majors are Criminal Justice or Business."
The B2R extends a hearty welcome to CJ into the Bearcat family.

Standing 6'1" and weighing in at 175 pounds, Hardegree was named as the catcher on the second unit of the 2011 All-Heartland Team. An excellent all-around athlete, Hardegree is from Amarillo, Texas.
OPSU head coach Steve Appel personally recruited Hardegree, who had an excellent prep career at Tascosa High School.
Hardegree is one of the best underclassmen players in the conference and is a fine defensive catcher. With the bat, he was the Aggies top hitter with a solid .333 batting average, and was also the OPSU leader in on-base-percentage at .400.
According to Appel, Hardegree is a "Very coachable kid, who works hard and continued to improve all season." Big things should continue for Hardegree, who is also a very polite young man and one who is well respected by his teammates and coaches.
Blake will compete for playing time with Luke Lawyer, Derek Meyer, Zach Douglas, and Michael Lavasseur this fall. The starting catcher position is up for grabs after the graduation of last year's starter JJ Baccari. Blake transferred to Northwest in the spring of 2013 and sit-out 2013 NCAA season due to transfer rules. Derek Meyer enters the fall, likely, as the front runner for the starting job based on the 25 games he played in last year, batted .310 with a .397 slugging, .333 on-base, .984 fielding, and 5 past balls. Physically, Blake is the biggest catcher on the squad and can hit with power.

B2R to soon announce drive for camouflage jerseys
Announcement imminent on B2R's drive to acquire alternate camouflage jerseys for the 2014 NCAA season
Maryville, Mo. - The 2014 NCAA Division 2 baseball season is 6 months away from first pitch but the B2R has been developing a plan to acquire permanent camouflage baseball jerseys for the team in honor of the members of the United States Armed Forces, past, present, and future, and to pay tribute to the sacrifices the service members and their families make so our Country can enjoy freedom and our way of life.
In the spring of 2012, 6-7 boosters got together to come up with the funds to acquire a special cotton camouflage uniform top. The team celebrated the United States Armed Forces with a special color guard consisting of members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. The brothers of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia sang a special National Anthem and God Bless America. The tops were only designed to be used one time. Later, the Northwest football team sported a special camouflage jersey during a home game in the Fall of 2012. I cannot remember a time when any other varsity team wore camouflage as a uniform before the baseball team did it in the Spring of 2012. If there was another Northwest varsity team that did so, it was a long time ago.
Its time to make it a permanent thing.
Stay tuned for the exciting announcement.

Breaking News - Huske signs with St. Joseph Mustangs, may start tonite's game
The B2R has confirmed Northwest's starting short stop has signed to play for the St. Joseph Mustangs during the 2013 season and will appear at tonight's game versus the Sedalia Bombers on June 22, 2013, at 7pm. Fittingly, tonight's game will be a salute to Northwest Missouri State University and a huge crowd is expected.
Brandon Huske made the most of his opportunity after transferring to Northwest from St. Charles Community College for the 2012-2013 academic year. Huske's glove work quickly earned him the starting short stop job in the 2013 NCAA regular season. In 2013, Huske started all 49 games, batted .280, but broke the school's single season record for walks (45), had an additional 11 times he was hit by a pitch, for an amazing .467 on-base percentage.
Good luck to Brandon and Go Cats!!

Jacob Raffaele signs minor league contract with Intercounty Baseball League, London Majors
First time on the mound. Former Bearcat Pitcher Earns Save in Minor League Debut
It did not take former, Bearcat Jacob Raffaele long to find out if what he wanted was what he bargained for with his first appearance for the London Majors in Canada's, Intercounty Baseball League. With the lead going into the eighth inning against the undefeated, league leading Brantford Red Sox, Raffaele debuted by entering the 8th inning and finishing the ninth earning the save and a 6-4 win for the Majors.
After arriving late to miss the first couple of games for the Majors, Raffaele arrived in time to complete one practice with the Majors and attend the home opener last Friday. The Majors must have liked what they saw because he quickly was inserted against the five time, consecutive defending league champions, Red Sox with a 5-2 lead going into the eighth inning. Throwing 27 pitches, 17 for strikes and scattering 4 singles over two innings, Raffaele allowed 1 earned run with no walks evening the Majors record to 2-2. "I was nervous as all get out with a new team, new surroundings and facing the best team in the IBL, but I know I can pitch against anyone if I pitch ahead, locate down and change speeds," Raffaele stated. The former Bearcat is schedule to be given a start next week for the Majors. Raffaele commented, "I do not care where or when the coaching staff pitches me, I just want a chance and compete to help our team win ballgames."
Canada's Intercounty Baseball Minor League is rich in history, dating back over 90 years. The IBL has been in existence longer than the NFL or NBA. Today, the IBL fields eight teams throughout Southern Ontario showcasing some of the top independent minor league talent. The London Majors were founded in 1925, and are based in London, Ontario. They play their home games at the 5,200 seat Labatt Memorial Park. The Majors are nine time IBL Champions.
To date, Jacob has appeared in 6 games, has a 2-0 record, 1 start, 3.30 ERA, 1 save, 16.1 innings pitched, 13 strike-outs, and 5 walks. Jacob's 13 strike-outs is good for 3rd on the team. The London Majors are currently 11-6, good for 4.5 games back from first place.

Patrick Brady to pitch for the St. Joseph Mustangs
Patrick Brady signed to pitch for the St. Joseph Mustangs right before the MINK season started in 2013. Patrick completed 2013 with 11 appearances and 14.0 innings pitched, all in relief appearances, for the NWMSU Bearcats baseball team. In 2011, Patrick both started and came in relief for the Bearcats. So far for the Mustangs, Patrick has made 1 start and 1 relief appearance. While Patrick has always been a lanky and athletic kid, the B2R has noticed he is putting on muscle on his 6'00" frame. Extremely smart and talented, I can't wait to see Patrick in the fall with all the experiences and training he receives over the summer.
